Home Networking Help (Wiring)
« on: March 07, 2014, 06:54:53 PM »
I've been thinking about wiring our house for ethernet. I did this in our last house by dropping Cat5 from the attic and it was pretty straight forward.

Our current house has a phone and coax cable line in every room and I've found 2 rooms that also have an ethernet jack. The phone lines all connect to a distribution panel that is an unmarked jumbled mess in the drywall in the garage. There are 4 Cat6 ethernet terminated cables also going into the cutout where the distribution panel is located. There is no switch and the cables are not marked. I have no idea where any of the cables lead and as I said, I can only find 2 ethernet outlets.

I do not want to pull new cable or cut drywall. I'd be willing to hire someone to set this up but don't know where to find someone to do it.

We have a cable modem through TWC, an Apple Airport Extreme, Time Capsule and 3 Airport Expresses. The idea would be to wire all these together through a switch.

I've considered using powerline adapters, but have no experience with these. I've also thought about converting the phone jacks to ethernet as I believe Cat5 cable was used, but have no idea how to figure out where they lead from the garage.

Any idea who I could call or how I could figure out where everything goes from the distribution?

I picked up a Fluke Networks TS100 for a great price on eBay.  Already had a inductive probe, the TS100 includes useful TDR functionality and its tone changes when shorting a wire pair for absolute confirmation:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvWryXA0lOY

But this Sperry ET64220 can help you sniff them out, it's got all the adapters you need, includes an integral inductive probe and is inexpensive.  Available at Home Depot, so it's easy to find anywhere...

I bought that Sperry device but it isn't helping much. I have it plugged into an outlet, but anytime I bring the probe near any of the wires, it beeps. It says it works from 12" away, so I think it is just picking up that wire in the midst of the other wires.

Here's a photo of what I'm dealing with

EDIT:

Here's what I did

Ouch, not pretty.

Good news. You don't need to know which ethernet cable is which. Just install a network hub at the junction box and plug them all in.

Hoping one of the ethernet outlets is in the same room as the cable modem. put airport base at whichever ethernet jack is most central.

Run wireless network throughout house.

Unfortunately after living here for a year, I have only found 2 ethernet outlets although there are 4 cables in that box. The room where I have my modem and router doesn't have an ethernet outlet but does have a phone outlet. My plan was to use the phone line and convert it to ethernet as both are Cat5e just different colors. I'm trying to avoid wireless as much as possible

As long as it's 8 conductor, then yes you can re terminate for RJ45. Most versatile is getting a Cat5E crimper and ends. then pick up a keystone jack couplers and keystone wallplate

Yep got the crimper from prior installations. I don't want to reterminate all of the phone lines though. Thats why i wanted to figure out how to trace them out and label them. Really just want one or 2 switched over. I think I'm going to call a pro in.

Nice. Did you end up getting a contractor or doing it yourself?

Some myself, some with an electrician, some with a contractor. I was able to trace out all the lines with the sperry digigal suggested.
