Motor upgrade to Thorens TD 850 (Origin Live)
« on: March 06, 2015, 11:18:36 AM »
Well, I thought I had fixed the motor problems on the TD 850 but every couple of hours it would rear its ugly head by a slight slow down in speed and then back up. I tried everything, replacing transistor, caps and variable resistor with no luck........so off to Origin Live I went. I bought their DC100 motor/Ultra box and standard power supply. Cost around $850 or so. Install was simple with only needing to drill 3 holes in the existing motor plate and install. After running it in to allow the bearings to settle in......it works great. So my great deal on the 850...became less than a great deal but after selling off the arm and cartridge that came with it I had $50.00 or so into the table, so the total cost was around $900.00. Still significantly less than what they go for used, if you can find one. However, now it has an improved and upgraded motor and killer arm (Michell Technoarm) making this a hot rodded version of the table. The Grado that is on it now is only temporary until my Benz comes back from Soundsmith, still another 2 weeks.

I might sell the Grado after my Benz gets in. I bought this to use during the Benz down time. It is the Reference Plantinum and will most likely have around 80 hours on it when all is said and done. I'll post it in yard sale if I do sell it. I'm still not sure since it is great to have a back up.

Here is what the finished job looks like.

Thanks. Function precedes form but form is important. If there is a romantic audio component it has to be the turntable. No other component combines the ascetics of Rube Goldberg coupled with pure ear candy potential. Well, maybe headphones can, too.
