Fair Price for McIntosh MC-7270?
« on: April 27, 2015, 06:13:36 PM »
A buddy of mine has fallen on (somewhat) hard times and is at the first stages of a gear purge.  He has two MC-7270 amps and asked me if I wanted to buy one.  He said he has one box/manual but that would go with the sale if he posted it on Audiogon, etc.

What is a fair price to offer him for one of these?  No bubbles on the glass and all bulbs were changed out a year or two ago.  I can attach a picture of the face of the unit, if you think that it helps.  He says it is a 9 functionally and 8 cosmetically (only due to age).

I don't really need this but if it helps a buddy out while he's working his shit out I would dump my old Sony 3000ES and use this instead.

At 1500 they sell. At 2000 they sit around and sell when the price goes  lower. This is a very old solid state amp, which probably is due for capacitor replacements.......if it hasn't been completed yet. USAUDIOMART is a great free alternative to AA. Personally I would stay away from it. There are many much better options in that price range. Mac SS.....so/so. Mac tube.....much better.

However, many like those blue meters which is a big selling point.

Thanks folks.

I do look at completed/sold eBay auctions to get a good idea what something is worth and it looks like 1300-1500 is par for the course.

Like I told him I don't really want it but the guy has a wife, two kids, no job prospects due to felonies, a horribly f-ed up back, and has been unemployed for a well over a year.  I do not feel too bad since he could part with a lot of his very high end gear (merlins, etc) and pay his bills.  He offered to let me have it for $1600 which I think is a fair price but all of my gear, including my Von Schweikerts, is in storage anyway and has been for over 6 months.

Ray, thanks for the US Audio Mart tip.

Why no give him a loan. Give him $1200 and hold the amp for collateral.  If he pays you back.....he gets the amp back.....if 5 he doesn't it is yours for 1200. Maybe give him a year or so to even up. If he is unable you could sell it quickly at that price and get your money back

That was how he got to the 1600 price.  He seems to think that he will get 2000 for it.  I told him today that I'm not interested.
