Senn 280 are too colored and cloudy sounding. They are fine for monitoring in the field and in noisy environments but they are not going to give you and honest picture of what you have. Neither is the AKG 280...they need a powerful amp to make them boogie and even then they are extremely bass shy and not a very good example of what is good today. Their 270 and 271 are much, much better but too need a good amp.

The best bet is AT M50 and Thinksound MS1 for isolation and useful sound. The AT will be more hyped and aggressive, with seemingly more detail and the Thinksound MS1 will be better balance with closer timbre accuracy but slightly rolled off in the extreme high end.

If you can get away with open cans then Hifiman 400's are the giant killers! Sen 600 and 650 are also very good and worth seeking, too.

True. I use the AKG 270 MK II with a AUNE T1 preamp with a vintage E188CC Philips tube.

I meant the AKG 240's not 280's. Sorry for the confusion.

Brian: Regarding "hurt" ... I think it's more design. They are fantastic sounding and well built. I just can't wear then for extended periods. I think you can purchase some sort of add-on cover that is supposed to help. Anyone know what I'm referring to?

^ I have that with Grados.  A number of my friends swear by them and don't experience any discomfort at all.  I think they sound good, but I can't wear them for long.  I was lucky to have friends that let me preview theirs as it is kind of a hazard in buying headphones:  you can't usually wear a pair for a half-hour or an hour in the shop!

If I'm mixing/critical listening, I still go for Sony 7506s, or lately Sennheiser HD 380 Pros.
If I'm listening for enjoyment, the Beyer DT770s are definitely my first choice these days.

Another vote for ATH-M50.

I've thought about upgrading to these many times...  But I've been happy with my Sennheisers:  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/240764-REG/Sennheiser_HD_280PRO_HD_280_Pro.html

I've paired them with a used Audioengine D1...

Its perfect for my use - late night listening while the wife/kids sleep...

I'd add a vote for the M50s. I preferred them to the Senn HD280s. BUT, IMHO the headphone output on the MacBook Pro is shockingly lousy. You'd be better served by the 280s + any kind of cheap DAC (and I mean, cheap) over the ATH-M50s and the stock 1/8" analog out on the MBP.

I prefer my V-Moda Crossfade 100s to the ATs, but they're $250 so out of your range.

Same here.  I had a set of first-gen Grado SR60s that I upgraded with the optional open earpads for the 80s and they were fantastic... but they weren't comfortable for extended DAW work even with the larger foam cup-shaped pads.

My Senn HD380s with the lightweight B&W cable I linked earlier though - not only do they reveal things I was missing with the Grados, but I can wear them for hours with no fatigue.
I am hitting my head against the walls, but the walls are giving way.
