Wake up....vinyl
« on: August 06, 2015, 08:24:15 PM »
I just bought the 5 record set of this very good show and the quality of the pressing is excellent. I have had the cd since it came out, which again sounds very good but this pushs it a bit further. @ $69 for the set it is certainly a best buy value.

Was it generated from a digital master?

Was it generated from a digital master?

That is tough to say. The original recording was done on a 24 track analog machine by John Cutler and it was also mixed down to two track analog. However, I'm not sure if between the two track mastering and the cutting whether a digital stage was added. What I can say is that the vinyl sounds better than any other live release. Well, GAMH is pretty darn good, too. It is a bit whispy on top and doesn't have the same organic sound as GAMH but it is fantastic, none the less. There may also be a bit more compression added, who knows?

With Buffalo going for $160.00 and this going for $69.00, the later is a steal!!!!!! Excellent show, great recording and dead quiet vinyl! When I get the time I'll compare it to the CD.

Last comment on the pull I'm listening to... one of many many many sources... started out with this:
"Marsalis plays some super lame Kenny G-style saxophone here"
I can hear what he's saying.  But would Sonny or Wayne or Dexter fit any better, I don kno?  He's prolly playing "down" to what the audience might be most familiar with in a tenor/soprano horn player.  I'll listen and enjoy and not judge, cause Jazz Lives Matter.

Maybe it's just that Branford is a pretty nondescript (read: kinda lame) sax player?
"Let's go do some crimes."

"To his mind, an opportunity to insult a successful ape came from the hand of Providence."
