Car playback: DVD-a head units?
« on: September 09, 2004, 10:50:13 AM »
Hey all-

seems like recordable DVD has been getting pretty popular these days, and expecially good for us now that the new Minnetonka DVD-audio burning program is available relatively cheaply. I have been thinking about making the plunge but I listen to a LOT of music in my car. Are there any head units that will play DVD-audio discs? If so, have any of you tried them, and what did you think about the sound quality?

Take care,
Ben

several manufacturers are making them. i've seen a kenwood dvd-a unit in person.  very cool, but i don't need a video screen (which also more than doubles the price)

simple dvd-audio only would be nice

Anyone heard of Innovatek?

I've been looking around and this one looks really nice and cheap.

Maybe thats why it's so cheap.

I don't care about DVD-A. I'll burn DVD-V discs.

The other consideration is that I want to put a hires headunit in my garage queen and one of those boy-racer neon faceplates looks a little too pimp for the car.  That thing is a perfect match.  I just don't know if they are any good.

I've seen the Kenwood deck as well. I took WSP 12/31/03 on DVD-A in to listen and was really impressed. The guys at the store were even more impressed that somebody could make a recording that good(Hubert's source) with only a bookbag full of gear.

Are the any other DVD-A capable units in sight?

Judging by the 'commercial' DVD-A (& SACD) market, demand for more DVD-A units doesn't show signs of growing.

The price is coming down, but the Kenwood Excelon KVT-915DVD is quite a monstrosity.

I just bought a new (2012) car that has a stock DVD-Audio player.

I've never burned DVD-A discs.  Can you use a DVD-R burner and Logic (for example)?

edit) not sure it matters too much as I tested a 24 bit ALAC file via the USB drive and it played ok.  Flac was not recognized however.

A standard computer DVD burner works, you just need DVD-A capable authoring software to drive it.

Samplitude does it natively from within the application if you use that or have a copy of it. There are paid and freeware DVD-A burner apps that will just to the authoring part, but support for DVD-A may be on the wane with some of them.
