Upgrade to Soundman OKMIIr?
« on: June 27, 2003, 02:14:16 PM »
Hello,
I'm using Core Sound Binaurals now and I'm fairly happy with them.  I'm looking to upgrade, but can't afford any DPA's any time soon so I'm considering the aforementioned OKMIIr mics.  Is anyone on this list familiar with them?  If so, do you think they'd be a good upgrade from the CSB's?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with them, but a couple questions may help those who are familiar, or those who have comments about possible alternatives:

Are you going to use these mics for stealthing?
Any open taping at all?
Ballpark budget?

I'm looking for something that's going to be primarily for stealthing with the occasional attachment to someone elses mic stand.

Those mics are around $300 I believe.  I don't want to spend too much more.  The DPA's at $1000.00 are a bit out of my league.

I'm one of the few folks on this list with much experience with stealth mics and collecting stealth tapes:

Here's my super-biased personal opinion:
I'm NOT a fan of these mics. I take every opportunity to shit on them. I think they tape like goddamned pussies. They have a very light, sorta-clear sound, but I think that's their failing. They're very weak to my ears and I've heard of them having SPL-handling trouble.
4061s will run you about $750 new (powered by the DPA box, not that HEB business) and they were my upgrade from CSBs. To me, they were the only upgrade! All other options had too many flaws to make them worth my money. If you want to stay 100% stealth, I say, save your scrilla and stick with the CSBs until you can afford 4061s.

IMO, not an "upgrade" at all! But that's MO... er... my opinion...
