Topic: Epoxy, insulation, elmer's glue and stuff

I've made a few cables, and usually they are pretty clean.  I've also seen some other cables and taken them apart to see how they were put together and sometimes there is a silicon looking hardened epoxy in there providing more insulation and support...

I've thought about filling my cable plugs up with something similar, but don't know what to look for or what I can use.  I've looked at RatShat, but couldn't really find anything...  Of course, I didn't look too hard as I was there buying something else...

But then I thought I might be able to use Elmer's Glue, but that is water based, so I thought it would be conductive...

Does anyone know anything about this stuff???  Should I be using something like this, or should I avoid it?  If so, what can I use and where can I get it?

I have heard of people using a hot glue gun to do similar things (like fill areas of circuit boards) as well as silicone and epoxy. It is probably a good idea to use "something" in the cable connectors to stabilize...

Go to your local boating store and get marine epoxy... Made up a set of low profile xlr connectors that way and it works well

If I were gonna do that I'd go the silacone route...the type the hardens of course.

I'm not sure about the epoxy (if it's good or bad or indifferent) but as most epoxys are mixed there's a chemical reaction taking place.  I'm unsure if any of these chemicals would be corrosive to the copper/silver/whatever of the conductor.  They may well not be...but I wonder.  Silacone, most definately is not.


I also think that if ya make the terminations well there is no need of doing this at all.

shouldn't interfere at all, and with epoxy, nothing comes loose...

#1 doesn't harden
#2 is an irritant

#3 doesn't even look good in boobs

The marine stuff once hardened is like plastic.
