v3 question......
« on: April 08, 2004, 10:54:23 AM »
could the v3 add more off axis rejection than the 480's have???

it seems since ive been using it, they have a WAY better off axis rejection than the dmic couldve ever dreamed of, its like it picks up JUST music even w/ the card caps, cause ppl were screaming pretty close to my mics and i havent heard it at all on my recording, and yes, they were behind my stand 8)

A pre has nothing to do with off-axis rejection, so I doubt it is the V3 doing this. Maybe they just sound a lot different with the V3 and you are not 100% used to it yet?

It seems to me the v3 has the exact opposite effect because of the detail it adds, allowing for more pickup of ambient noise.

well, if they where behind your stand you wouldn't hear as much using cards since they have no pick up in the back, now hypers would be a different story due to that pick up lobe in the back

ya know, I think the v3 pulls in so much detail, that it can make crowd less noticeable, even though in reality there might be more of it. just a theory, I think I noticed the same thing when I ran one, in some noisy environments. The chatter close by I'd hear, but the crowd hum, not so much.

I agree with Creekfreak, the rejection is b/c of the cardioid capsules, since they have virtually zero pickup at 180º off axis they can reject an amazing amount of noise that is coming directly from the rear. At a few shows I have been yapping away right behind my mics with virtually none of it being noticeable on the recording.

To my ears, the V3 makes all the ambient noises (crowd, venue reverb) more noticeable, my first impressions when I first started running it (at 24 bit) were:

1) How clean and transparent it sounded.
2) That I could REALLY hear just how crappy the venues sounded that I was taping in!!  (TOO tour Nov/Dec 2002). I also often heard chatter and conversation on my recordings that I never noticed while standing just a few feet from where the mics were positioned.

Regardless, I also am really happy with my V3! I like the excellent detail that it brings out in recordings, even though that detail can detract from the recording if there is a lot of ambient sound, when the conditions are right IMHO it is really tough to beat!

Happy taping,
Ben

you know, that wasn't really my complaint with the v3, I didn't think the crappiness of the venue stood out any more than 4022>eaa>adk or mme. just wasn't happy with the, let's say, smoothness of the v3 a/d stage, as opposed to the punch and warmth of the mme.

it just seems when i ran the dmic, the chatter and all the other little things stood out more, guess its a combo of diff gear/card caps!!!
