CA CAFS + CA 9200 + PCM-M10 Ideal Settings?
« on: August 25, 2013, 02:20:24 AM »
Sorry if this is a total n00b question, but I just received my CA 9200 preamp and I'm wondering how to use it, and what settings would offer a good starting point when used with the Sony PCM-M10 and CA CAFS mics?

Before receiving the preamp, I taped a couple shows by plugging the CAF mics directly into the PCM-M10 with the volume mic level set at 1 to avoid distortion.

Here's how I have the preamp connected:

CAF Mics into the 9200 input.
Accessory cable from the 9200 output to the mic input on the PCM-M10.
9200 gain: ?
9200 Volume: ?

The first thing you want to do is go from the preamp into the line in, not mic in, on the M10.

Loud rock show or something similar?

I started with similar setup but using CA-11s and CA-14s mostly recording loud rock in theaters and clubs

This is what I would recommend:
 - line in on the M10 for sure
 - start with m10 in the 3-4 gain range
 - 9200 volume at max
 - 9200 gain 10-15
 - record at 24bit/48 or 44.1 kHz (24 bit for sure, kHz a matter of preference, i like 24/48) in case you need to adjust gain in post you have a little more flexibility

This worked for me in pretty loud situations so adjust based on what you're recording. You have more gain on the pre if you need it but for the most part I stay in the 10-15 range. You picked some good gear to start with. Have fun!

What kind of shows are you taping? Loud rock? Quiet stuff? Far away or close up?
For loud shows
Line in
Preamp output always at max. * this is only good for really quick adjustment in the field * or when you need to attenuate a signal like going into a camera.
Gain settings from 0 db for very loud stack taping. To +15 for really loud but distant recording.

For quiet shows
Line in.
output at max.
Gain at +25 to +40 db.

If you are going 24 bit try and aim for -12 to -10 db of level on your vu meter. If you cant always watch if if you can watch the levels go for -10 to -5 At peeks.
Remember as with any omni they are much more sensitive to low end and they are much more likely to need less overall gain because of this.
