Battery box 9v for 5v mics ok?
« on: January 22, 2014, 02:02:44 AM »
I have external mics which use same caps used in the internal mics of Sony PCM-M10.
http://www.frogloggers.com/BT%20EM172.htm

The mics do not work on line-in on M10 only mic-in.
When I added the Soundman A3 adapter (6v battery) they work on line-in but I want to eliminate it since I am suspecting the A3 distorts when music is loud.

1. Do I need a battery box to make them work line-in?
2. Should it be a 9v battery or will it damage these mics? (the specs show operating voltage 5v but I have used 6v adapter)
3. If yes both, something like CA ugly? http://www.church-audio.com/viewcategory.php?groupid=3

thank you.

1 yes
2 the link you provided says 3-10 volts will work, 5 is recommended
So yes 9 will be ok
3 any BB including the one you linked will work or you can look into a pre like the 9100 for example
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Thank you willndmb.
I sourced a BB.
I prefer not having a pre. I'm hoping I get enough signal with BB and line-in (when used for "rock"). Next one will be P. Smith in an auditorium.

Hi Pool

I use EM172s with 9V bias all the time. As Willndmb mentioned these capsules can be used with a higher bias voltage than 5V.

These capsules are very quiet and also pretty sensitive. I don't think you will have any trouble plugging the output of the battery box into the line input if you are taping a rock show.   If it is too low you could try turning off the PIP bias voltage on the M10 if possible and plugging into the mic input.

Thnaks MIQ.

When using the battery box in line-in, does the PIP in the M-10 need to be off or on?

Doesnt matter, the PIP only works through the mic in. But you should switch it off anyway.
