Help with SONY MD recovery
« on: August 22, 2014, 01:25:58 PM »
OK...
I need a little help here...

Out of complete stupidity, I was able to get plugged in for a Jackson Browne SBD this week...
BUT...
When I went to turn my deck on .. I got .. " NO CARD"... AHHH.. !!!
I forgot to put the SD card back in the deck.. and had no spare either!
I had to use my back-up, back-up.... an old SONY MZ Mini disc recorder.
AHHH....

After shutting the deck off between the encores..
For some reason.. the deck re-started at the beginning of the disc..
possibly erasing the first 3 songs of the set...
I'm not sure if this is a TOC error or not.
BUT.
I don't have the ability to do a Mini Disc recovery to see if the songs are still on the disc .. or if they've been erased.

Can ANYONE help me, who can do a old Mini Disc recovery.. ??

Thanks guys.. !!!

What does the disc show as being on there? If i recall correctly you shouldn't have just shut off the deck i believe you need to finalize the disc(TOC) before powering down. And if that was the case recording more after that mistake has recorded over your first recording most likely. There are detailed instructions on minidisc.org for a TOC clone but your problem is different since you recorded more onto the disc after.Good luck.

The Disc shows 61:20 minutes recorded on the disc and-018 tracks (I guess I had it set up to index a track where there is silence... ?? if that makes sense)
The entire set should be about 81 + minutes long.

The first track (01) is the START of the set... and only plays for about 20 seconds
but then it is CUT off.. and quickly changes to track 02... the start of the Encore's

After the encore's, it picks back up in the middle of the 4th song... and goes to Track 03 (in the middle of the song from the original set...

After the original set, I stopped the deck .. .it wrote a TOC...
BUT when I started it back up for the Encore's.. it started BACK on Track 02 ...
I'm guessing the the TOC was written for the second recording (the Encore's).. or else that wouldn't have come out..

I'm puzzled.

Could the original track 02 still exist... ??
or was it overwritten by the second recording.???

These SONY decks don't work for cloning... I've tried long ago.
If anyone can do it for me... just to see if anything else is on the disc..
It would be greatly appreciated... !!

Most likely you have overwritten the disc.  I have done this myself a few times and have never been able to salvage the material.  What my MD recorder would do and I suspect yours did is after being powered off position itself at the start of the disc and begin recording there.  To avoid that you would have had to hit track forward button to the end of your recording and then record from there.

There used to be a method of writing a new TOC to the disc.  I believe there was a hack... what you end up doing, in essence, is writing an 81-minute TOC to the "damaged" disc.

Depending on which model MiniDisc desk you had... that allowed this.  If memory serves, my Sony MDS-JE510 was one such MD deck and it was a common one.
