Church Audio CA14 + A3 Adapter?
« on: August 10, 2015, 01:55:49 AM »
Hi,
perhaps a stupid Question.
In the past I used the Soundman OKM Rock Micro with the A3 Adapter.
Last year I bought the Church Audio CA 14.

Is it possible to combine Church Audio with this Adapter?

It might seem to work, but would likely distort if the music got at all loud.

The A3, per the Soundman Site, only outputs 1.5 volts. That is not nearly enough for CA14's. It is also less than the plug in power you'd have by plugging it directly into the mic input of most any recorder. Chris doesn't recommend this though. He recommends using a 9 volt battery box or preamp.
AT853's (all caps)/CM-300 Franken Naks (CP-1,2,3)/JBMod Nak 700's (CP-701,702) > Tascam DR-680
Or Sonic Studios DSM-6 > M10

I always assumed it was 6V output, because it takes a 6V battery.

The site actually says 1.0V output, which seems a bit pathetic.

I never used the A3 adapter with my OKM II Classic mics, because it sounded inferior to plugging directly into my Sony PCM-M10 with PIP, and was one more thing to go wrong. No wonder if it really is only 1.0/1.5V output.

I might see if I can test the output later.

Mics: Sennheiser MKH 8040, Sennheiser MKH 8020, AT BP4025, AT 853 cards, CA CAFS, CA 14 Omnis, CA 11 (Cards + Omnis), Soundman OKM II Classic
Battery Boxes: Sony XLR-1, CA 9200 Preamp, CA Ugly 2 Preamp, CA Ugly BB, Shure FP24
Recorders: Sound Devices MP3, Sony PCM-D100, Sony PCM-D50, Sony PCM-M10, Sony PCM-D10, Roland R-07, Tascam iXJ2

Finally got round to checking this.

With a new battery (producing 6.34v) the output was 5.84v. I would expect this to work okay with many mics in loud situations. Be careful though, the A3 output is a function of the battery output, and when I put an old flat battery in the adapter there was enough juice to light the green light but probably not enough to power mics properly.

Whilst I had my voltmeter out I decided to check the PIP output of the two recorders I own.

Sony PCM-M10 PIP output 2.96v
Sony PCM-D100 PIP output 4.71v

Both the Sony's outputs were consistent irrespective of what type of batteries were used.

Battery Boxes: Sony XLR-1, CA 9200 Preamp, CA Ugly 2 Preamp, CA Ugly BB, Shure FP24

its all about how much plug in power the device provides anything over 6 volts will be good anything under 6 volts???? You might run into problems.
