metal detectors at the door
« on: November 18, 2016, 02:14:18 PM »
New to TaperSection.

Curious how other tapers are handling metal detectors at the door to a club when it comes to getting a recording deck thru.   the club I go to often for 4-5 shows didn't even ask when put my cell and recorder in the bowl and slid down the end but the last show, they made me coat check my deck.

any suggestions to getting the deck thru metal detectors?  my mics don't trip the detector nor my power supply for the mics either  so just the deck.

thanks

Todd

Slightly off topic, but has anyone had any gear issues later from walk through detectors when open taping?

If it's one of those doorway-like metal detectors there's no place to hide.

I have the Sony PCM-M10 and it looks like a camera/phone/whatever. At places like Madison Square Garden I just dump it in the bowl along with small mics, IEM earbuds, keys, phone, wallet, a bunch of metallic junk and wires all jumbled together, and they just don't care.

If it's wands, well, there's the crotch method....but in the YouTube era I really don't think things are that rigorous.

earmonger's got the right idea.  You have to make them not want to deal with it.  Overload them with crap that they're not looking for.  I've not had to deal with airport style yet, but I've dealt with wands and the like successfully.

Are modern camcorders and audio equipment have enough metal in them to trigger metal detectors?

Depends on the specific gear and the sensitivity of the detector... For example a DR-2d has quite a bit of metal as the casing, whereas a M-10 does not. But that doesn't mean that the DR-2d will always set it off, or that the M-10 never will.

i walk thru metal detectors alot with my m-10 never has an issue..not too say it didnt give a beep but there must be different types of beeps and lights that goes off between dense heavy metal objects and something that has very little lite metal like the m-10

Yes, great idea to keep discussing in public the idea of just throwing it into the bowl.

:banging head:   As I said before this should be discussed privately.  Doesn't benefit anyone publicly disclosing our methods.

Point-and-shoot cams are generally allowed at shows these days - and they can now shoot beautiful 4K video.  So no need for a camcorder anymore.

I was wanded at a Gillian Welch concert last month, a first for me. I haven't seen any airport style metal detectors at concerts, not to say they don't use them, but it would have to be a pretty big event to justify the cost. Presumably they know what a recorder looks like so if it sets off the detector you'll have to take your gear back to your car. My cell phone didn't set off the wand, so the sensitivity is probably fairly low. OTOH if they are just looking for knives and guns maybe they don't care about small electronics. I don't stealth, so I'm not trying to get around the detectors, YMMV.
