is it barring whether or not you can easily have one fixed? That determines my vote. I'm saying level playing field, so I'm an ad1k man.

HMM, ok, barring conditions...isn't the ad-1000 and ad1k the same thing...either way I voted for the mini-me due to ease of use, reliability, better design, and lightweight when compared to the ad1k.  Plus, the mini-me sounds better!

well, after using a sbm-1, a modsbm-1, a mini-me and finally a V3 I would have to say I like the V3 best, but only because I think it fits my schoeps the best. The mini-me is a fine unit that would fit some mics very, very well.

Heya,

When you say you like to v3 with the schoeps, do you like the a/d stage portion better than the mini-me, or just the all-in-one solution?

Just curious

well, being that I have no direct comparison between the A/D in the V3 and mini-me I have no feedback on that. As an all in one box solution I like the V3 with the schoeps. The clarity and highs of the V3 compliment the schoeps lows and color very nicely.

i dont care what you guys say, but graham patten needs some recognition..... ;) i have heard MANY great tapes w/ these units......also, they had an earlier all in one solution and gave way to bigger companies like grace and apogee to try to improve these boxes.... ;D

It would make sense that the 480's sound good with the mini-me. From what I have heard on tapes and from other tapers is that the 480's have great highs and smooth mids, but not slammin lows, the mini-me will just warm things up and make the low end a little more pronounced. As I said before and will continue to stand by, its all about what sound you want and what mics you are using.

creekfreak,
I couldn't agree any more with what you just said. ;D Before I got the minime, I ran an ad500e.  I really liked the Apogee sound-That's why I chose it over the V3.  Not to mention the USB port for my lappy.

Didn't you have for a while, the MMe and the V3?
I'm sure that in your case with the Schoeps, the V3 gives you more of the sound you are looking for.  Did the MMe make the lows sound slightly exaggerated?  Like it's often said..."Just trust your ears."  I think the best way to spend your money on any piece of gear is to collect many different pre/ad sources used with the mics you own, or vice-versa.

here's the thing with a/d's.  its the same principal as in pre's- they all serve different purposes.  the v3 a/d compared to an apogee a/d is going to be completely different as they have completely different goals in sound.  I prefer apogee to everything  IN GENERAL (not always) as long as my minime doesnt ever catch fire.  :-)

I did use both for a little while, and don't get me wrong, the mini-me with the schoeps sounded good, but sometimes the low end would get a little bloated if the house mix was off.

I also loved the V2 when I had it. I love the way the lunatec pre's just tighten everything up hence the reason I like the V3.

One important item has to be considered.....stealthability of the unit....and the only one that fits the definition of ability to stealth with is the mod SBM-1....that is unless you are Scott Brown, stealthing with a V3!

When I used the modsbm-1 I really liked it. Nothing beats the size and performance of the modsbm-1, but since I never stealth its not an issue with me.

You guys have been talking about A/Ds that are also Pre's.  What's your fav standalone A/D?
In the first category, the V3 is my fav all in one unit.
As for the standalone unit, the AD1000 and the AD2k are my favs.

well, I would have to say the mini-me, yea, it has a pre, but it also makes a very nice stand alone A/D when you put a V2 or other pre in front

well the ad1000 is also a pre and an a>d

I am pretty set on which pre I like for myself and don't really want a one box solution, if I did I would use either the mini me or v3. The v3 in very good sounding venues and the mini me in places that were not as good sounding or the acoustics were not as ideal.

I would like to use the ad1000 behind my oade m148 but dont because I feel it may break quickly and not be fixable. But that is my ideal setup.

There where 2 mini-me that I recall that caught fire when they first came out. I don't know if any one truely knows why, there was a debate between what caused the problem, bad power cable, or the mini-me it's self....the mini-me took a ton of crap for it, but it was not a widespread issue.

FWIW,
I heard the MMe issues were related to the Pro Digital DC connectors not fitting the receptacle properly and shorting the units.

Thats why I cut the connector from the AC wall wart and made my own harness from the connector that came straight from Apogee.

Hey Dan, when you say harness, what exactly do you mean?  If one were to cut the connector, which I doubt anyone actually uses, it would be a 12 volt connection right?  I have been running mine on 12v for a while, but was thinking I might hack up a 6v power connector shortly!

Daryan,
That is correct.  I cut the connector that is at the end of the wall wart and soldered a 4-pin to a few feet.  I don't think there should be any difference between 6 or 12 volts.  You may want to email Gary over at Apogee to be certain, but I don't see how the SLA voltage should make any difference.

As a straight up AD the AD1000 is the standard in my mind. It is so clean and transparent. The MiniMe however seems to add a little color(even line in). If I was going to buy a all in one box, I would deffinitely go with a V3, and when my AD1000 dies (hopefully no time soon!) I will.
