Mountain Smith Day Pack
« on: August 25, 2003, 05:20:06 PM »
I am switching from a sonicase to a mountainsmith day pack. The one thing I really liked with the sonicase was that I could leave my cables pluged in my V3  so all I had to do at the show was open up the side velcros and plug in my mics. I want to be able to do the same thing with my mountainsmith bag so I was thinking of just cutting some small holes for my XLRs and Digi cables, but I'm not sure if I would ruin the bag if I cut it, has anyone else done this? Anyone have a better suggestion than cutting?

Brian,

Somehow, we need to get all this info into a single thread

I'm planning on an Archive thread dedicated to building right angle cables - XLR and RCA, including Markertek part #s for connectors, cabling, etc.. Think I'll include the power cable hack in there, too.

Not sure how much vertical room you have in the pack, but you could also build a foam or cardboard spacer and use regular old cables.  A recent thread:

If you cut the bag,. you might want to sew a piece of material over the edges to keep it from fraying.  It would be really nice if you duplicate the sonic and others idea of making a velcro "door" that could help in foul weather.

I used to work at an outdoor shop and we sold all kinds of boat outfitting.  I got some minicell foam and drilled holes through it and it works as a really nice support for everything.  I got sandpaper and shaved it all down to be approximately the same size as the v3.  It fully supports the cables and doesn't take up much room in my MountainSmith Office pack.  If anyone is thinking about going to a mountainsmith bag, I fully recommend looking into the Office pack.  Slightly larger than the Day pack, but it is designed for folders and files to drop in and not get crushed when zipped.  Here is a link:

I was scanning backpacking sites and trying to learn a little bit more about the hobby when I came across this MS Daypack for sale.  This same place has a lot of Mountainsmith smaller packs for sale if you click on their "Clearance" link.
