I am going to purchase a set of Sound Professionals Beyerdynamic Cardioid Mics and I'm unsure if I should go for the optional low sensitivity modification or not.  If you could give me some insight as to 'why' or 'why not', I would really appreciate it as I love learning from this group.  I've been doing this a LONG time but we can always learn and who better to learn from than this community of Tapers.

If it helps, I record classic & prog rock bands like Ian Anderson, Robin Trower, Deep Purple, Uli Jon Roth, Marillion ... not real heavy stuff although I did see King Diamond three times last year.

I use a Sony PCM-M10 and I'm looking at going with a battery box (not a pre-amp) and plugging via line-in.

Help me decide!

Here's a link to the mics in question ...

You're not saying what you plan to record or use them with but as I read the details if you're going to record rock and/or use a battery box or preamp you need that mod.

That would seem the best approach anyway.

I've been curious about these.  Don't think I've heard anything off them yet.

Awesome!  Thank you.  Don't forget to "vote" at the top as maybe somewhere down the line this will help someone else make a decision!

I just picked up a set of them, but yet to test them out. I bought mine without the 4.7k mod, because I will likely have them converted to mini-xlr to run on phantom power with my Naiant TinyBox. I also have a CA-9200 which has the switchable 4.7k mod built into it, so I will test them using the this preamp.  I sure hope they perform better than the SP-CMC-25's I bought last year. They sounded thin & tinny as hell, sent them back after 3 shows. Besides, all the 4.7k mod does is attenuate to signal strength by ~10-12db.

That adapter looks like a cool idea but you are limited to 16-bit/44.1kHz, according to the details page.  It does say it has a stereo mic input, FWIW.

Yeah, it's stealth with small mics, I don't care about 24/48

Better than their CMC-25's but got torched by a moderately loud indoor show. Missing Persons, if one can consider that loud. Four bands in total, all moderately loud, and result is unlistenable. I'm just gonna stick with my 3-wire AT853's and 943's and stop being a gear slut.

That sucks but although im no expert i think your statement about the 4.7k mod being a 10db attenuator is not correct,if i ran my pre 4.7k mod At 853 with an attenuator cable the bass was still distorted, but with 4.7 kmod never distorted even at the loudest shows.Id like to hear results with the mod.

You are correct. I have since learned that the 4.7k mod, developed by Chris Church, does more than just attenuate the signal.

This was running into the CA-9200? That indeed sounds like bad news.

So has anyone actually obtained a pair of these with the low sensitivity mod?
