Low self-discharge is a good way to go for peace of mind IMO, as you don't have to worry about them if they've been off the charger for a while. They have a charged shelf-life similar to Alkalines. I use Maha Imedions and they rock, the Sanyo Eneloops are almost as good from everyting I've read. There are now other brands as well, but those are the big two.
BTW, the battery issue that I had which I warned you about previously was with the Maha 9.6Vs which are not low-self discharge. I got two years of heavy use out of them though, bought at the same time as the Imedions which are still going strong.
