Thanks for the link.  I have never developed plug ins before.

I have switched from Matlab to Octave for both research and teaching.  (General programming, not plug-ins.)
Octave is open source and runs on Linux/Win/Mac.  The (simple) GUI works on all platforms.
gnu.org/software/octave (https://gnu.org/software/octave/)

Octave is not as well developed, and lacks the special toolboxes.
It also lacks the realtime "Simulink" Matlab environment.

I still use Matlab for data acquisition, in particular, connection to National Instruments DAQ hardware, running under Windows 7.
