Title: R-09 Preamp Basics Lesson
Post by: e.maynard on July 23, 2009, 12:50:43 PM
I'm looking into a preamp for my R-09 to use with mics I already own.
(SM-81's Oktava 012's, maybe dynamics EV 635's).

This will be for quieter sources like live acoustic recording & such.
I'm trying to lower the noise floor a bit while upping the quality while not going broke.

What's a good place to start looking?

Thanks a lot!

Do you need phantom power? If so, you might look at something like the Sound Devices MixPre. It's very quiet with lots of gain. Runs around $500 used.

I Second the MixPre recommendation. Should sell my Apogee Mini-MP. Never tempted to use it anymore since the MixPre is so much more convenient to use. Many people here seem to prefer the Apogee sound, but both sound great to me.

Of course you could aways upgrade your noise issue with quiet and most compact system with newer R-09HR.

09HR is very much quieter, much better build quality, and with higher definition recording modes.  See tech reviews of both decks at:
