Never mind the breathing sounds, it's all about the bass...
« on: November 19, 2016, 11:33:23 AM »
Recorded Foy Vance last night, stealth style. Lovely show (albeit a bit bassy) and a nice recording...

...except that I can hear myself breathing. Not cool.

Anyone managed to get rid of the breath sounds without crapping up the recording? Or should I just (a) mount my mics somewhere else (b) hold my breath for two hours?

Sample to follow asap.

Right. Change of plan. Now I'm looking to get some thoughts on what to do with the bass on this recording... all advice welcome! :D

Where are you mounting the mics?

The answer, of course, should be "on my hat." In which case the solution is probably to use some sort of decongestant prior to recording...

For this recording Izotope Rx is probably your best bet but it'll be time consuming (and expensive)...

Having had a slightly more critical listen, I've decided that I'll just have to live with the breathing. It's not too bad over speakers. If I can just hold my breath for up to 5 minutes at a time it'll be fine :)

Mics are mounted on croakies on the glasses... always fine with consistently loud shows but the quiet ones, oh, the quiet ones... Last night's show went from loud to very very quiet off-mic singing, so it was always going to be tricky.

Having decided to live with the breathing for now, my next plan is to take out a little of the THUMP without compromising the rest of what is close to my favourite tape. Sample here:

Probably a good idea for the long term...

I'm fairly surprised breathing would be audible...

I collar mount when I have to and haven't noticed any issues.  I usually record very quiet shows.

I tend to notice movement induced phasing with a lot of head/hat mounted efforts.
