Superlux S502 ... who's running one ?
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:47:33 AM »
and what do you think ?
I've read some rather good reviews on gearsluts.   One fella did a direct shootout against schoeps ORTF stereo version of the cmc6/mk4, with file comparisons..and they were very interesting.
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-shoot-outs-sound-file-comparisons-audio-tests/733645-superlux-s502-vs-schoeps-mstc64.html

I'm thinking about snagging one, since they are pretty cheap.  Maybe send it off to Busman or something for some "tweaking"...
:)

I just ran across these on eBay this week.

They've modded it already.  Frankenstein diagrams included.  A DIY job.

The mic has come up a few times in the past, thanks for posting the link to the recent shootout comps.  Linking this thread to another one that you started about them last year

Did you ever snag one of these Nick? Id love to hear your opinion and a tape recording a well known band in a decent size place, so it gives us an idea what it sounds like. And of COURSE you MUST record FOB/DFC with it so you can really hear how it sounds ;) If anyone wants to let me borrow one, I will run it FOB/DFC in a week or 2 at All Good, so we can hear what its really capable of ;D

This certain;y isn't a well known band or a decent sized venue :) but there are great comp files of the S502 and a Schoeps MSTC64 here

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-shoot-outs-sound-file-comparisons-audio-tests/733645-superlux-s502-vs-schoeps-mstc64.html

The high end is really harsh compared to the Schoeps especially in this recording environment.

I would buy the S502 in a second if you could change the orientation of the capsules    :hmmm:

Listening to this pull from a Greensky show from last year, sounds pretty incredible...def. has me intrigued.

I like them pretty good; can be a little "shrill" on the top end, which can be a good thing when trying to cut through a muddy room. I looked around for a "mod" when I first got them to see if I could take a little of the top end harshness out of them, but gave up. Also, I have only ran them direct to DR60 and DR70; a preamp may tame these babies a little. They are definitively worth the price though

Hi all Tapers,

I am using (with others mics)

the cheap (but great) Superlux S502.

You can hear some audios I made with it
for some Belharra Trio Live concerts (Classical Music)

http://bit.ly/belharratrio

or directly :
http://belharratrio.wixsite.com/belharratrio/audios

Recorder was a Zoom F8 (1 concert),
then now, a Sound Devices 788T (all others concerts with
Ortf Mic and MidSide Mic togethers to make a choice after concert...).

These records are left without any Post Production.

Good listening
