Topic: 24/48 vs 24/96

i have completed building a rig.  modded nak 300>edirol ua5 (oade w+mod)>mt 24/96

my understanding is that the mt will not take a 24/96 signal from the ua5, but rather a 24/48 signal.  so my question is which is more desireable:  a 24/96 signal via the analog output of the ua5 using the mt internal a/d converter, or a 24/48 signal from the ua5 using the edirols internal a/d.

i do also have a d8 (been a patcher for a long time), so i could run 24/96 to the mt, and 16/48 (or 44.1) to the dat.  good back up, but i would  rather dump the contents of a card to a hard drive, and dither in post for 16/44.1, rather than take the time, and transfer the dat.

There are several threads about this where you will find various opinions.  I always record at 24/96.  However I was challenged with some test recordings from a Deva and I could not hear a significant difference between the 48k and 96k samples.

Definitely go with a 24/48 digital signal from the UA5.

The internal A/D of the Microtrack is less than spectacular (and definitely not as good as the UA5), and the differences between 24/48 and 24/96 are minimal compared to the difference between the 2 A/D converters.

awesome, thank you very much.  that is exactly the response i was looking for.  i figured that was the way to go, but wanted some more input.  i guess the thread really should have been titled "ua5 a/d converter vs mt a/d converter"

ok, maybe i was incorrect about a couple of assumptions here then.  i d/l the manual to the mt, and it says it can record on cards up to 8gb.  is that wrong??  oh, wait, so when you say "split", i can have up to an 8gb card in there, but am starting a new track at 2gb.  am i reading you right??

so, can the ua-5 pass a 24/96 through the coax output?? 

if so, then i am golden.  the mt hasnt arrived yet, so i havent had the chance to experiment with it yet.  lets hope priority mail has a new toy for me today...

You're right in that you can use an 8gb card, but you would be limited to 2gb files sizes, thus the issue with the split.  While I think the word "pass" implies it's sending on a signal from an earlier point in the chain without changing it, the way you mean it is true.  Just have the ADV button on the back turned on, and switch the sample rate selector on the front to 96 REC and you'll be able to send that to the MT via the coax out.

I'm interested to hear how your Nak > W+mod UA-5 sounds.  I have those pieces, haven't gotten around to trying that combo yet.
