Windscreens: DPA DUA0020 vs DPA DUA0896
« on: July 24, 2003, 01:24:12 AM »
Any opinions on these two windscreens??  Both at sonicsense for $14 a piece...I have the Shure A81WS for windy conditions, but I'm thinking I want a lower profile wind(smoke)screen for indoor taping...would the smaller one work for indoor smoke protection??

thanks for you opinions

I bought the Shure 81's(Love em) for my AKG 390's for outdoor, and i use the WS that came with the AKg's for Indoor.  Personally, if i needed to buy a set for indoor, i would go with the DPA DUA0020's for Smoke and AC Vents/Fans.  I would think the smoke wouldnt penatrate any WS, but would rather collect on the outside of it, so id go for the Smaller ones.
 IMO.
I could be wrong.

i used to have small ones for smoke n shit, now i got the dpa 96 for indoor fans and smokey rooms, the big 81 shures for outdoor windy nights, and i got small ones for low profile setups.

i like the 896's for indoor smoke and AC wind.  i've never really used the little guys that came with my 184's.

I have a set of the DPA for my 140's and they work great for indoors (use the shures for outdoors).  I think mine are the 020's which are "normal" looking screens while the 896's are "cruncher" looking (IYKWIM).  I used rabhan's 896's at Nissan and they worked just fine under a shed (semi-outdoors). You might want to considr the 896's as they would do great indoors (as would the 020's) and could carry you outside in gental winds where the stock screens may not do as well and, when the 81's would be overkill (but effective).

Yes, they are perfect for smoke screens! The only reason you would need the 896's is if there are serious fan problems with the venue.

Thanks to everyone for the input...+T to all...I think I'm gonna go with the 20s for indoor smoke and bring the 81s along just in case of noisy fans, etc

thanks again

matt, i still think you should go with the 96's.  this way you can protect the mics from smoke and ac, and be covered in a light wind outdoors like jah said.

If a third opinion matters...the 896's are the only ones I have.  The only outdoor taping I have done thus far is in sheds about 20 rows back...so these usually cut the mustard.  Eventually I will get the Shures when I hit the gorge eventually, but until then...these are a great utility wind screen.

hmm..well..I'm not sure I understand the downside to having the 020s and the 81s....it seems that if I want a smaller windscreen than the 81 for indoors, I might as well have the smallest one (020)..because I can always use the 81s just in case its windy indoors...ahh...it doesnt really matter....maybe I should pick up a pair if both 020s and 896s just to be sure :)))

if you have the 96's you won't need the 20's.
