None. The R44 is pretty neutral and quiet.

I've only run them once so far, and found them to be pretty much the same as with my SD MixPre. Full sounding, but still a bit shiny. I ended up doing a mix with omnis (Nak CP3s) to fatten up the bottom. If I'd only had the Avantone pull, I would've been happy:

while I think it really matters which mics it's paired with, I did like the Busman UA-5 with my LD mics.  And I would run my SD MP-2 in front even though it's not digi out.

The deck has fine pres on its own; the oade mod I have brightens it up a tad.  I think it sounds better with DPAs and AKGs than Schoeps; I feel that the MK41s can sound a touch harsh on the Oade mod pres.

I like the USBPre2. Easy to use, good meters, light, easy to power, transparent and clean, and cheaper than the Grace boxes.

I run the Naiant littlebox into it with my KCY setup and while I admittedly do not like the sound quite as much as the SD box the price and convenience are hard to beat, and the transformers do good things especially with the MK41s. I've made great recordings with both though.

I agree, i have an oade mod and i have been really disappointed in the results running the Schoeps without a pre. My better results are using my ACM  V-3.....best results using the V-3 > AD2K.

I like the KCY Littlebox w/ Output Transformers. In fact, mine should be here anyday now ;D

I've never run those Busman mics but certainly the V2>R-44 combo is nice. I think the analog inputs of the stock deck are certainly quiet enough to run line-in from the V2 without worry.

Just curious, would Mixpre-D (digital out) to R44 (digital in) do anything? I mean, make it 'better', or would it just be more of the same?

I prefer the a/d conversion via the Sound Devices box when compared to the R44.   I'd suggest a USBPre 2 to the Mixpre-D as the digital output is via coax instead of AES making for easier cabling.

It makes the R-44 irrelevant...reduced it to a bit bucket.

I'm gonna go back to some pre's sound better with certian mic's.  Using the mixpre-d is like any other coax output preamp.  Now is it better?  I think that depends on if you like the sound "better" than the stock R-44.  The R-44 is a great all around deck with no serious shortcomings as far as the sound goes.  If anything I thought the Edirol(Roalnd now) sound was slightly grainy for lack of a better description.  Given a choice I'd probably prefer the A/D unit from Sound Devices.  BUt none of that really matters is the preamp is not a good match to the mics.  I cannot speak to how the mixpre-d sounds.  I've only used the mixpre, mp-2 and usbpre2.  And the mp-2(mixpre) is a lot different sounding than the usbpre2.

^^  I could be mistaken, but does the MP-2 have transformers whereas the MixPre and USBPre2 do not?  I've never done or heard a head-to-head comparison between them but I'd think that would make for a different sonic signature between the MP-2 and the others.

Mixpre has transformers. It's basically a newer version of the MP-2 but both are out of production now.  And yes that will make a sonic difference among other things.

So...

MP-2 and MixPre = transformers

USBPre = no transformers

Thanks for the clarification, kirk.
