Maybe going full digital
« on: May 13, 2004, 07:26:08 PM »
i have a nikon f2 with dp1 and dp2 prism, 20mm f2.8, 55mm f1.8, 105mm f2.5, 200mm f4, and sb-16 speedlight.  needless to say, alot of gear and a hassle to change lenses when i want a different shot.  i considered buying another f2 body, but now i'm thinking of selling all of the stuff above and buying one of the newer 8megapix cameras.  nikon and sony have 8mp cameras for about $1000.   one thing  i don't like about my current sony 4mp camera is that after i click the shutter button the camera takes at least 2secs to take the picture.  is this common to alot of digital cameras?  has this issue been fixed with the newer higher mp cameras?  i'm also thinking of selling the f2 rig with all lenses and buying a f4 and some sort of wide angle to portrait zoom lense.

the issue has been fixed with some newer cameras.  one of the cameras in that price range i think you would most likely be looking at is the eos-1d (little over your range, but in the quality you wanted.  if not that then the 10-d which is a lower mp but still an ok digi slr).  If you buy new or used you MUST ask if the upgrades have been done to either of these models to make for faster shutter>write speeds.  I believe Canon upgraded it from something like 8 shots a minute to like 24.  I'm most likely off on the numbers, but I know it was a significant improvement.  I don't recall the exact phrasing for the upgrade.

8 shots a minute?  on the 1D? or 10D?  The 10D has always been 3 frames a second/9 shot buffer.  The write speed hasn't changed with firmware....it doesn't take advantage of write acceleration, but is still pretty quick.  I'm not sure what it'd be per minute with my faster CF card, but well over 8/minute written out to the card.

No clue on the 1D, but that's old news with the introduction of the 1DMKII.  I believe it's the only 8MP digi-SLR out there...the 1D was 4mP, 10D is 6.3, and the new Nikon D70 is only 5 or 6?  Are you talking about a digi-slr?

It's not all about higher pixel count, as higher pixel density on the same size sensor introduces more noise.  Anything over 6mp on a 1.5 or 1.6x crop factor sensor is probably overkill.

If you're ditching everything, I'd look at Canon DSLR's, as they seem to be one step ahead of Nikon in that arena.  If you're looking at other 8mp digi cams, I don't know what to say, as I've never looked at them.

i'm considering ditching everything and buying a nikon f100.  i might consider a dslr if i can be assured that my pics will be as good or better than what i shoot now.  printing pics is another issue.  it's just that i'd prefer one camera and at least one lens ( ~20mm>~135mm ).
