V3 > (SBM1, modSBM, ADC20,??)
« on: June 17, 2005, 07:00:23 PM »
Just wondering if anyone (I'm sure tons of people have) had run one of the lower priced A/D coverters behind their V3.  Planning on using my V3 in 16 bit mode until I get a 24 bit recorder.  I still want to run my D10 or D8 as well.  Backup maybe, probably just gear slutting it.  So i'm thinking of picking up a cheap A/D so I can run analog XLR out of the V3 into something into my D10 or D8.  FWIW, I'll be running with 481 or 483's > V3 > ???

What's sounding good to people's ears behind the V3?

Suggestions? Opinions?

I like the way my setup is right now V3 >jb3
after re-reading it, justlet the d10/d8 do the a/d it is decent enough to serve the purpose

I'm not clear on what you're trying to accomplish.  So you don't have a 24-bit recorder.  But you do have both a D8 and a D10.  So...turn *on* ANSR and run an AES1 consumer out to the D10 and RCA S/PDIF out to the D8.  That gives you two copies, and if it's a hassle to run both you just drop one off and stick with a single recorder.  Am I missing something?

I need to lay off the bottle next time I post.

Let me try and explain better.  I  run a V3 and I have two portable 16 bit decks.  In the near future I will also have a 24 bit deck.   I cannot run both a 24 bit deck and a 16 bit deck out of the V3 together without them both being 16 bit.  But if I run the 24 bit deck out of the V3 digital out and run the V3 alalog out > ??A/D?? then I can have both a 24 bit master and 16 bit master.

Why would I want to do this?  I'll  have a few extra bucks next month and I thought i'd buy some other gear for the sake of "why the fuck not"

It would be something like
24 = V3 > R1
16 = V3 > modSBM > D10 or D8

Had anyone really then run a seperate A/D behind the V3.  If so which was preferred?

If you're talking about V3 > 24 bit device and wanting to run a backup, I'd just split the signal and send one to the backup.   I've forgot to turn on the ANSR on a couple occasions, the inherent noise IMO was virtually unnoticable.  Personally I wouldn't bother with another A/D device.

i wouldnt worry w/ another device either. the truncated 16 bit copy will sound better than you think. i was pleasantly suprised when i ran a jb3 as a backup to my usbpre>lappy@24/48. there is also a lengthy article in this month's stereophile covering this exact topic. the conclusion was that a truncated 24>16 copy was as good if not better sounding than a dithered 24>16. these are just opinions though.

I haven't used a h/w device to truncate 24- to 16-bit, but I will say that when I truncated using s/w I found the results unpleasant, fatiguing, and more noticable than I expected.  I don't know why h/w truncation would be any different from s/w truncation, so I don't plan on going the truncation route as a backup device while I'm breaking in whatever 24-bit recorder I pick up.

also, letting a DAT truncate to a 24 bit signal down to 16 bit is only an option at 48 kHz.  if you're running the V3 A/D at 24/96, then a DAT won't lock on that digi signal anyway.

as far as your original question, the V3 pre-amp is the same as the V2, and there are tons of shows out there with V2 > [fill in A/D converter here].  why don't you just check out some of those sources and see what you like.

I'd take that $550 and put into my stereo and run line into the d10

there is a colorado native taper named scott who does this. i think he runs

24bit: V3 > m-audio forewire 410 (or fw audiophile) > lappy
16bit: V3 > xlr to rca > modsbm-1 > jb3/d8

good luck

Ditto

I wouldn't want to add another peice of gear to power, more cable for a backup, unless you like lugging around more toys and spending more cheese.

Thanks for the responses.  The fact is I have a little bit of cash in my pocket.  Don't mind a little more gear for the time being and thought why the hell don't I run and extra A/D for 16 bit.  I think I may have been a little confusing to start this thread.

Chalk this one oup to the "I can so why not" thread.

since the R1 does not have a digi input, I would take analog out of the V3 to the R1 for your 24 bit, and use the digi out of the V3 (with ANSR on) to feed your 16 bit devices. I think the AD in the V3 is better than any of the low-end AD converters out there (IMHO of course)
