He told me, "If you want it, go get it - work for your tape" I told him I couldn't go back stage and that he was a fucking prick.  He told me he he wasn't a prick.

i was with you fully until this part.

you potentially speak for all of us when you're in a confrontation with club/promoter/band authorities.  wise up and hold your tongue.  worst case scenario, you get a black eye.  best case scenario, well... you don't get a black eye.  but you do still get to look like a douche in front of your peers now that you've posted your story publically!  sweet!

oh yeah, and your screenname sucks.

damm doggie! you go pedro!

so incog. what super pedro is trying to say is that alot of the boys out there are quite chummy with Aud engineers, security, promoters, buying agents, and club owners.
being savage about a situation that could jeopardize many many years of hard work is quite normal. Most of the club folks seem unapproachable but actually MOST want what you have, tapes!
Shake hands, make friends, introduce yourself! who knows you might be asked to sign a contract and pull multiple board D.O.'s, post mix with the AUD's, then take the clubs multi video pulls and maybe author a DVD for them...??
think of that, then youd be the man, walk in free, special seating, bling bling and ho's! u name it!!!
Happens all the time in my state!
may the force be with you! +T

They are very right about being nice to the venue.  I've got back stage passes many times just because I was cool with the band and staff.

just  a funny little thing I want to point out.

-You go to show, tape thinking you shouldnt.
-Get busted and grateful you didnt get kicked out of the venue by the security guard.
-enjoy the rest of the show
-find out it was an open show
-proceed to call the guy that let you stay in the show a prick

I  don't know about you, but you wouldn't even be telling this story had you been kicked out of the show....some nerve man, some nerve.   it's just funny how some people start off doing something they think is wrong, find out later it was ok, and change their whole attitude.

Well, I dare say that I got caught and kicked out of the venue when I saw Depeche Mode in Seattle 05. A security guy busted me less than a minute before the show kicked off. Since I was doing everything (taping, filming, etc etc) the whole thing led to a huge thing later, involving the security manager that escorted me outside the arena and told me that he would black-list me throughout concert venues in Seattle. So I got kicked out in the end, and I was forced to wait outside for my friend who would later drive me back to Vancouver. God knows how I managed to find this friend later on among the home-going masses. The worst experience of my life really.

Bottom line: since I am a foreign national living in Sweden, I don't mind telling this anymore. And to be honest this would the first and last time I visit USA again.

Bottom line: since I am a foreign national living in Sweden, I don't mind telling this anymore. And to be honest this would the first and last time I visit USA again.

Why would that be?

I wasn't there and I'm sure that you had a bad experience and it sounds like the people were less than polite to you, but who is to blame for your poor experience other than yourself?

Why blame the entire United States for a situation that you only have yourself to blame for?  If this same thing happened in another country, in all liklihood you'd have been given the same treatment...being ejected from the venue without seeing the show and some harsh language.  That's what happens when you break the rules in most places...although I'm not sure about Sweden.

Frankly, this is a reasonable punishment (since you were filming) because there was a time in the past in the US where venues attempted to confiscate or damage equipment...glad those days are pretty much over.

Having said this, I do understand that it was probably a humiliating experience.  It's a little bit lame when they treat people really nasty for stealthing.  I mean, it's not like stealthers are mass murderers.

On the other hand, if they don't show a little anger and make some kind of threats of retribution, what dis-incentive do people have from doing it over and over?

(Unfortunately, anger and harsh treatment is one of the by-products of the US society where crime is quite a bit more prevalent than in Sweden.  While stealthers aren't common criminals, we Americans have no problem treating criminals like criminals...and this might not be a good thing since even criminals are people too and deserve some form of human respect...I suppose.  To be sure, it's not a nice feeling when you're treated the same as a common criminal...however, I'm just trying to understand why a Swede may have felt so harshly treated in that situation such that you'd blame the whole country for your experience.)

Regardless, I hope that some day you'll feel less hostility towards the US for your poor experience and come back.  There's of course a wealth of special experiences and special people here, as I'm sure there are in Sweden and most any other country on the face of God's green earth.

The bottom line is that if a venue or artist does not want you to record and you do it anyway you are breaking the rules.  It's black and white.  There is not gray area.  Don't get mad when you get caught and punished and don't blame a whole country for the way you were treated by one or two individuals.

I  don't know about you, but you wouldn't even be telling this story had you been kicked out of the show....some nerve man, some nerve.

You know - reading through advice and comments left after my story - it's pretty clear - calling the guy a prick was just a complete boner, best to suck it up.  That point has already been made abundantly clear.

Your simplistic recount of the incident is completely misleading
"-find out it was an open show
-proceed to call the guy that let you stay in the show a prick".

You make it sound as though I called him a prick because he had the audacity to bust me while stealthing an open taping band.    Did you read my whole drawn out post prior to commenting?  I think I made it clear in the story, as well as in subsequent posts that I accepted that I was busted, when busted AND that he was pretty decent about it.  Compared to a story I had read on these forums previously, I should have bought him a beer for being so decent.

I initially had NO PROBLEM with this guy doing his job (apparently better than I was doing my job as I got caught).  the issue occurred afterwards when it was made clear to him that I had been given permission to have my tape back.  I was taken back at his attitude because he was so decent about the whole thing initially.  He made it personal and I took it that way.

I still 100 % agree that I reacted poorly and should have bit my tongue - very constructive criticism has been written prior (and better) to your post.

"I  don't know about you, but you wouldn't even be telling this story had you been kicked out of the show....some nerve man, some nerve."

Of course I would! The point of recounting the story was to share the circumstance and result of getting caught.  I explained this clearly already.

"it's just funny how some people start off doing something they think is wrong, find out later it was ok, and change their whole attitude. "

Not true.  I don't think I conveyed this in my posts.

I'm unsure what value you feel you added to this.

My suggestions :

use black electrician's tape to cover up the red light that goes on when the camera records.

if your camera is small enough, put a sock -preferably black- over as much of the camera as you can (of course, not covering the lens or the microphones, though if you can get some audio and still cover the mics, you can always upgrade the audio) // or, if you can find a sweatband / wristband -that tennis players sometimes use- in the color black, it can sometimes fit over the body of the camera.

Some videocams allow you to turn it off.  But you'll probably have to really dig deep into the user's manual to find out how as it's typically buried in a sub-menu (of a sub-menu?) within the cam's main menu.

It's actually quite easy.  In my camera it's right in the menu.  i believe it's called a "Tally Light" - it's just a matter of clicking "off".

knowing to keep this light off would be pretty basic I would think.

I am. I was busted taping here (Globen, Stockholm, Sweden) yesterday. I was not forced to leave the place but I chose to anyway since most of the show had passed and the guy who busted me repeatedly threatened to break my flash recorder I didn't want to leave it with them and go back. Rather than losing my recorder (they don't have the right to do that) and possibly having to involve the police to get it back I co-operated and deleted the files.

I won't tape at that venue again. The guy dragged me around and showed me to all the staff members (he didn't take my name, picture or anything though).
