Yamaha OPL3-Sax sound card

I cannot get 16 bit playback or recording in this card right now. I have a gateway laptop I like to tinker with and this is not good. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestion on what I need to do. I have installed the new drivers and can get 8-bit sound. PLEASE HELP ME. I dont want to pull out my hair...
