Alternative to TASCAM PS-P520?
« on: December 09, 2012, 11:37:39 AM »
Hi everyone,

I just purchased a DR-100 Mk2 on eBay and now awaiting transit.

I also need an AC adapter and was dismayed to learn that TASCAM didn't include one. After a bit of research however, I can see why. Here in Canada, the price for one is about 1/5 the cost of the TASCAM unit I just bought.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative that is safe for use with the DR-100 MK2?

Thanks.

According to Ted's list of power inputs (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=150794.0) you need a 5v power supply with a 4.00 mm x 1.7 mm barrel, which I would have thought would be easier to find quickly but I could only come up with this, not sure if you've seen this, or what shipping to Canada would be:

http://www.bixmart.com/5V-3A-AC-to-DC-Power-Adapter--Connector-40-x-17mm-_p_158.html

There's this as well, you may be able to contact the seller and see if they'll ship to Canada:

This looks to be the cheapest, though they say 3.9mm outer diameter, which I'd be curious about:

In tonedeaf's review - it sounds like you can power it via a USB source as well - but you have to start the recording in battery mode, and then attach to USB

Thanks for the replies.

I'll have to check out various hardware and computing shops to see if they have something that matches those specifications.

The shipping for most of those 5volt adapters from the US is often more than the cost of the adapters themselves. Pretty crazy!

Do you have radio shack in canada?  Take your deck in and they'll set you up with what you need for under 20 bucks.

Yep, we have radioshack but I think it's called the Source now. I'll have to pay them a visit.

I've also been looking for a car adapter to recharge my macbook pro while on the road.

mikegyver makes one and includes a USB port to recharge the ipad while the mbp is being charged at the same time. I would imagine you can plug it into any electrical outlet as well so I may go that route depending on how long it takes (sometimes I don't always want to have my MBP out). I believe your test reveal it takes 3 hours to charge the DR100 Mk2 from empty to full via USB, right Tonedeaf?
