Power for Sound Devices MixPre 2
« on: December 17, 2012, 07:49:38 PM »
I am thinking on getting a Sound Devices MixPre 2 and I need some advice on power for this device.

Sound Devices dot com says "External 5 to 17 VDC powering"

Do you think I could use a 12vlt LiOn battery to run this using phantom power?

If so, does anyone here make custom cables for connecting an external universal DVD battery to the pre-amp?

Thank you kindly.

The one in this thread can power both devices at the same time.
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=157799.0

The dr-2d can run off the 5v USB power and the mixpre off the main power output.  I can build cables for both.

You are THE MAN!!!!

I am getting back into taping and I am trying to do as much research as possible about the new gear I am going to be buying.

Back in the day it was only toss away batteries and tapes.

I sure hope you will still be making these cables in the spring when I get my gear.

Thanks,

Richard.

Tgakidis,
Like the OP, I also have a DR-2d and was a little sad that I couldn't power it through its USB port. Are you saying you can build a cable terminated to fit the battery's USB connector at one end and the deck's 5VDC plug at the other? If so I might be interested too.

No, You can not power the DR-2d from it usb port.  You can power it from it's DC power input FROM a USB port that provides 5v power.  There are lots of battery out there that have a USB port that provides 5v power (like ones used to recahrges cell phones and ipods.)

See how this tekkon battery has a USB port.

This battery comes with the tip and cable to power the DR-2d, but for the Mixpre you would need to get a cable built!!

I use a single Tekkeon MP3450 to simultaniously power both my MixPre-D and PMD661.

I also use an AC Adapter on MixPre-D for times when there is power.  I've got one extra left for sale in the yard sale if you'll have access to power you might be interested in it.

Here it is!!  Still a few in stock.   :hmmm: I might need to pick up another one

So this thing will power my UA-5's and all of the above mentioned units?  Does the 3.7V mean anything? Sorry..Im not well versed in external batteries or electronics for that matter lol!

I don't know anything about batteries so can't answer your question, but the thread linked below is all about the battery mentioned.  It should apparently power most things 9-21v DC, and anything 5v through USB.

Should work with a UA5 as long as you have a reverse polarity cable!
