Title: IPA vs. nbox?
Post by: MakersMarc on February 05, 2017, 09:51:09 PM
thought this might be fun and contentious. Not sure what I think, just got done with a run of shows with the IPA and pretty happy, about to switch back to nbox for a few in same rooms, same spots.

I haven't run the IPA but I have yet to find a pre that "I" think sounds better (with Schoeps) than the nbox. Keith and Ed ran side by side at Cat Stevens last fall, one using an ipa and the other using an nbox but they were running different caps (cards with the nbox and hypers with the IPA) so it is hard to compare the 2 recordings. I say run what you feel the most comfortable with.

I've been real happy with both, just wondering what folks thing who own or have run both. I'm  8) almost always so side by side isn't an option.

Well, I would certainly rather deal with the super small & easy to power IPA, than the 3x9v Batteries option of the NBox, but that has NOTHING to do with it's sound! Regarding sound to me, the NBox-P sounds too bright and harsh with Schoeps IMO, though I have never heard a side by side COMP ;)

In the end, both are HQ preamp/powering options and should sound pretty kickass!

That is interesting Bean. I don't think I have ever heard an nbox or any of it's predecessors described as "too bright and harsh" with the Schoeps. How would you describe the sound the Schoeps have with your individual setups (VMS and 70D w/ PFA)? I am sort of stabbing in the dark here, as I have no clue what your playback system is either. I don't want to completely hijack Marc's topic here, so feel free to PM me if you like.

Another very satisfied owner/user of the NBox-P (and previously the NBox+).  I haven't used the IPA, so I can't opine between the two; however, I've never once thought that the Schoeps>NBox (P or +) sounded bright or harsh, or else I wouldn't have ran NBoxes since 2006.  Hearing is very subjective and certainly dependent on playback gear, so what sounds good or better to me might not hold true for you (or Bean).

I've found Nbox>41 to be a bit thin a couple of times but that had more to do with venue sound. Never harsh. So far I'd say that the nbox is a bit more detailed than IPA all things equal I'd run the nbox but when I need tiny the IPA comes close enough to make me happy.

I have been using the RBox which led to the NBox and finally NBox Platinum and have been very happy with the sound and when I need help, the service.

As far as the NBox Platinum being too bright or thin,  I have never felt that to be the case.  I always run  >:D

I don't hear any harshness in the nbox recordings I've heard. YMMV.

Both solutions provide the Schoeps capsules with 60v and output in "line" level. With the PFA at +20db, they're functionally equivalent pieces of gear. You might be able to hear very subtle differences between the two over good headphones while doing a blind ABX test (I'd love to help make such a comp), but even if you could, I doubt you'd ever be really unhappy with the one you liked less.

A KCY Nbob> IPA is a little less inexpensive than a nbob> nbox set. But I'd make a decision based on the ergonomics of running your rig, your battery systems, and your downstream gear.

Sound wise? its likely to be a wash.

What I love is that the IPA is the size of Trumps dick. Very small. Smallest ever.

Would you go so far as to say it sounds, "spitty"?   ;)

Ran 4v>nbob>nbox last night for Bettye LaVette. Happy to have both of these fine units, I think it really may be a wash.
