Apologies if this has been discussed.

I just watched the official video and  "It's gonna be awesome!" "It's gonna be great!"

I can't get  the phrases out of my head...

X AIR XR18 - Video

Any way the though I had from many of us that multi mic onstage is that it's an ok stage box with midas pres, and 8 of them can be conrolled via wifi by most any OS (windows, Android, OSX, iOs, Android, RasberryPi) and will record multitrack to a usb drive.
obviously its really for live FOH mixes , but depending on your needs it's affordable stage box. One could mic up the stage and if a hose feed can be routed back through the snake, you could also get that, and mix in post.

anhy way just thinking  if you have AC power and record a lot in one or two venues it could be helpful.

Only the 18 channel models work as a multi-track recording interfaces - the others only record 2 channels to a USB drive

They are awesome in any case - I have  the XR18 - love it!

Do the 18 channel models require you to use a DAW or can you record to a thumb drive?

I've used the XR12.
Love this unit.  Two track USB stick recording.  The XR18 if you need multitrack.
Excellent user interface.
Note: realtime monitoring of levels (including RTAA), but not of audio signal itself.

If you have access to AC power, this is a great box.
Tough as nails and can be stowed anywhere, on stage, under the stage, wherever.

Yes - you will need a DAW to record with the 18 channel models.
