Hey Guys,
Just looking for a cheap bit bucket to dump a bunch of dat masters into.
Really only constraints would be coax in. Thought about going for a dds drive but don't really want to deal with cracking open the computer. don't need anything fancy, just cost effective.

If the masters are going to wind up on your computer at some point, why not save yourself a step and get an audio interface with SPDIF?
I have had great success with Focusrite interfaces, and you get a pair of really nice mic preamps for recording at home along with it. Here's their cheapest model with SPDIF:

Or...get a coaxial SPDIF input board for your computer and the Focusrite Saffire Pro and program it with your computer for Standalone Mode and have a great analog-digital Preamp and Computer interface for a bitbucket...

For coax input, I would look for a used microtrack or older marantz flash recorder (pmd570, pmd670, pmd671).

Why would you need a separate SPDIF input board, if the interface which already has SPDIF I/O (such as the Scarlett 6i6 I linked) is connected to the computer? This seems like a needless complication. Just get the interface which has SPDIF - end of story.
I have a Saffire Pro 14, and the only separate hardware I need is a FW interface since my computer doesn't have it built in. Again, SPDIF is on the Saffire interface.
As far as standalone mode, yes that's a cool feature on the Focusrite interfaces, but to go mobile with them you need a 12V powering source.

I stopped doing that cause I don't like my computer being taken up by real time transfers! run the transfer to a bit bucket then transfer via usb or card.

Marantz 661 has spdif in, an ISO in the yard sale should turn one up. And a great deck taboot.

Silly question, but why not use the 722 in your sig line? It has coax in, no?
I have been but the cf card slot is screwed up and don't want to put the wear on the hard drive although I do need to send it off to get fixed. no coax in but do have an aes->coax cable

Sure it does! You just need a SIMPLE & CHEAP BNC->RCA adapter ;) Put one on the 722's BNC IN/OUT, and you now have a Coax Digital IN/OUT on the 722! I did this for YEARS with zero issues FWIW!
Here's a CHEAP 2 OUTPUT adapter from EBay! I found that VERY quickly! If you do a more detailed search online, you can get them for around $1-$2/Each With a SIngle BNC Male IN->Single Coax Male OUT! ;)

OUCH brother :( Sounds like your 722 needs to go back to SD for a major checkup! If the CF Card is screwed up, and your INHDD is flaky, it DEF needs to go back home to be fixed lol ;) I'd worry about getting your 722 fixed before I worried about transferring DATs, but that's just what I'd do! Once your 722 is all fixed, you can just transfer your DATs->722, once you hit up your local Radio Shack or order from the above eBay links, and get that Male BNC->Female RCA adapter so you can turn the BNC jacks on your 722 into a Digital IN/OUT setup ;)
Then you won't need ANYTHING but a cheap little $2 adapter from Rat Shack/eBay ;D
