I have the Audioengine A2's and they are fantastic. $200. Worth every penny.

I actually prefer the sound of my cheap m-audio pair, to that of the pricier KRK V4's.

I have KRK RoKit 5s and have enjoyed them. The 3rd generation model recently came out so you could get a pair of the 2nd generation ones for $200 ($100 each). They used to be $150 each. Pretty good deal.

+1 on these, they are what I use at home.  The only negative is that the amps have noticeable self-noise in a very quiet room - i.e. you may notice a faint hiss.  For me, one of the two has this more than the other, but not enough to make me think it's anymore than manufacturing variance.  Yes, I have verified this with different sources, etc.  The noise is still WAY lower than with other cheap monitors I've used, like those from M-Audio and Alesis, both of which I'd stay away from.

Do yourself a favor, and put these up on stands instead of on your desk.  I have the QuikLok ones that are linked on the B&H along with Auralex MoPads (were a package deal from Sweetwater).  Then you can really get the most out of them when they're placed at the correct hight/angle.

I'm curious...with this rig, can you get a good clean sound volume in say a normal sized living room (say about 10 x 15) without overdriving anything?

My main listening room/office is a little smaller than that and it fills the room nicely. Any bigger and I would think stepping up to something like the audioengine A5+ or even adding a sub to the A2 would do the trick. I am really amazed by these little A2s though, the full sound and amount of bass they throw is quite deceptive from the size of the cabinets. Quite a nice little product.

i have a pair of jbl 62s (ancient bookshelf spkrs) powered by a lepai 2020a ($20) on my desk at work. it cranks.  parts express sells these:

same set up, very happy with the sound, and the DAC is a great little headphone amp!

I found a pair of KRK Rokit 6 for $120, thinking about giving them a spin. Anyone have any experience? How close might they sound like the V4's?
