Recommend me a Recorder
« on: June 12, 2014, 01:28:04 PM »
I find myself doing mostly fly gigs as a FOH Engineer and tour manager lately, and my R4 rig in a Nova 4 bag is too big to carry onto a plane.  I'm looking for a recorder that I can throw in my backpack to use on tour.

If the Tascam DR60D had a digital in, this ISO thread would not exist.

Would love for it to have:
AES or SPDIF Digital In
XLR/TRS combo ins
4 channels - 24bit
Small, tiny, portable...

maybe: built in mics, external battery option, digital out

not concerned about: price, storage format, plug-in power, video compatibility

Am I just describing the ideal recording device?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks
Monitor Engineer: Band of Horses, Cage the Elephant, Bruce Hornsby, The Head and the Heart, Josh Ritter

R-44?

Never mind...Missed that part about price not being a concern!

Sony pcm D1, there's a new model of it out.  Check B&H.  I have a d1 I've been using since they came out and it has never failed.  Very versatile piece.  On a contract job sometimes I use it as a presence mic.  When playing, I'll find a sweet spot in a room and set it up on a tripod for the performance, or a monopod depending on the venues policies.  I use the monopod as a cane as I hobble in :)   The stealth monopod (top secret) is a hiking stick with a 1/4-20 thread supporting the hand rest., take off and put on recorder.

This seems to have optical digital output but not input.

Sonosax minir82

The Sonosax Minir82 uses a hard drive for four-track recording, and a CF card for two-track. I wouldn't use a hard disk recorder on the road.

It also doesn't offer XLR/TRS inputs.

The "new" version is the Sony PCM D100. More here:
https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-audio/cat-recorders/product-PCMD100/

and here:

Works great for me, but don't know if it fits all your needs. Worth a look.

No XLRs, though it does have both optical digital in and out. Only two channels.

2 x XLR input via 8-pin binder stereo cable, but yes, not a direct XLR input, that helps to keep the recorder as small as it is.

The Tascam DR-680 meets pretty much all of your requirements except one: it's not tiny.
