Marantaz PMD-661 - "Error D.In"
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:29:00 AM »
I'm hoping it may just be my digi coax cable that is bad. But, Sat. night, I was set up to record. I powered everything on and when running from V3 to 661 via digi coax, I got an error message on 661 that flashed "Error D.In".

Aside from me thinking it's the cable, are there any other thoughts? The 661 was preset on D.In at 16 bit / 44.1kHz.

Note, I ran with no problems at Phish at the end of July. But, noticed the weekend before while taping that the cable seemed to keep losing signal to 661. So, I would jiggle it and it worked.

Thanks in advance.

Bryan

I had the same problem with the V3 > 661, including a dodgy connection that intermittently worked when I jiggled the cable.  Got another cable and had no problems.  It seems that the 661 may be picky about digi cables.

...I've been using this cable for several years now...so, I'm sure it's seen better days. I've always tried to coil it up when not in use. I'm thinking a right angle digi SPDIF cable from Ted will do the trick!

The only other possibility is whether an internal jumper on the V3 (ADJ7) is set to pro or consumer.  My first problem was that it was set to consumer.  Switched it and it worked fine, then my cable went bad after awhile.

No clue how to fix that. I'll start with replacing the digi coax...

Another possibility:  unless you've enabled the "ANSR" 16-bit dither-down on your V3, it will be outputting 24 bits, and you've got your 661 set to 16.  Try switching to 24 bits and see if that works.  Any reason to record in 16-bit?

Of note if the sample rate frequencies are not set the same then the PMD661 will give you the same error message.

At 44.1 kHz, for the usual cable lengths of 3 or 6 feet, any decent-quality RCA to RCA cable will do; special "coax" with 72 or 75 Ohm characteristic impedance isn't needed.

It's a matter of signal wavelengths. When a cable is less than about 1/8 wavelength, its characteristic impedance doesn't matter enough to worry about. At higher sampling rates, the cable's characteristic impedance begins to matter at correspondingly shorter connection distances. At lower sampling rates and with relatively short cables, it's simpler: You only have to care about making a good electrical connection.

So don't get all attached to any one special cable because you paid extra for it and/or have been using it a long time; just switch to any other well-made cable in good condition that you have, and it will very likely fix the problem.

--best regards

P.S.: S-P/DIF signals use the same bit assignments and the same bit rate (for any given sampling rate) whether 16-, 20- or 24-bit signals are being sent. If you send a 24-bit signal to a 16-bit receiving device, the receiving device simply ignores everything beyond the first 16 bits, effectively truncating the samples. That isn't good audio practice (you'll get granular noise on low-level sounds, so in this situation a dithered 16-bit signal is called for), but the connection itself is entirely workable from a data transmission standpoint.

--It's been years since I looked at the standard, but if I recall correctly (and that's becoming an increasingly dangerous gamble as I get older), S/P-DIF as opposed to AES/EBU may only use 20 data bits per sample at a maximum anyway, with the lowest-order 4 bits of 24-bit sample values being thrown away in effect. Maybe someone here who's read the standard more recently can confirm or deny that. ISTR that the lowest-order 4 bits are transmitted separately in AES/EBU (which really does treat them as data bits) while those particular bit positions in S/P-DIF are assigned as unused flag bits for future expansion or the like. OTOH the manufacturers of receiver chips could perhaps bend the standard and recover those bits.

I don't think I had the ANSR enabled. I've set the 661 to 16/44.1. Currently, I don't have a playback system that, I feel, is worthy enough to be able to tell the difference in 16bit and 24bit. So, to save a step in the transfer process, I've just recently started recording in 16/44.1 vs. 24/48.

I did wiggle the suspect cable and noticed signal loss. I then plugged in another cable from my friends' rig that is currently at my house and there was no loss of signal using a different cable.

For some reason, this post is vaguely familiar to me. I got a 661 when they first came out and had a V3 at the time and I seem to remember having to swap the jumper. It involved removing the top panel of the V3 and moving a tiny jumper to a new position. Surely a careful hand is needed, but it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Of course, this remembrance could be lost or made up in the sands of time.  :P

So I decided to take some brand new cables I purchased from Ted out for a spin tonight. Still got the same error message. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the cables I purchased. But, I'm still at a loss. I guess I'll try switching the jumper as mentioned above tomorrow. Really wanted to tape the band I came out to see tonight, too...

The joys of being a taper and having technical issues!

The thing that is really puzzling me is I taped a Phish couple of times a couple of weeks prior to me posting my original post above and had no issues. Nothing was changed in my gear with the exception of the digi cable.  ???

So I found a Dynex digital coax cable that I was using from my DA-20 MKII to my receiver. Tried that cable and it worked. Sucks, to...I really like the GAK right angle digi coax I bought from Ted and was looking forward to using it in my bag.

That said, maybe I'll find another use for it (it's too short replace the Dynex digi coax I unplugged from my DAT>receiver). Otherwise, I'd use it for that. If all else fails....I can hold on to it for a rainy day or I have brand new, never used GAK digi coax for sale. Ha.

:edit: I still haven't opened up the hood to check to see if the jumper is set to pro or consumer. I've ran the V3 since purchasing it from this board for several years now w/out issues until August. Seems to be the cable...

Looking at the manual for the V3 I did see this.

ANSR™ SWITCH This switch activates the ANSR™ dither circuit which allows the V3 to output
16-bit data on its digital outputs. The amber ANSR™ LED will illuminate when this circuit is
active. Use the ANSR™ circuit when recording to 16-bit digital devices such as DAT and CD-R
recorders.

I tried switching on my PMD 661 from 24/48 to 24/96 without switching my SD MixPre-D and get the same message.

The Sample Rate Frequency on the PMD661 must be set to the same as the source sample rate frequency or no joy!

That is really old. Update it and your issues with the digital input should be fixed. It will also make the recorder compatible with larger, faster memory cards.

Any steps on how to update the f/w?

What's the current f/w version anyways?

OK...so, dumb question. I'm assuming I need to d/l the latest f/w with the 661 connected to my PC via the USB, correct?

Copy the .bin file to the root of the sd card. With Ac power connected, power on the recorder and follow the on-screen instructions.

So, I FINALLY got around to updating to the current F/W. Planning to tape Saturday night. Going to see if updating will now allow me to use the digi coax GAK right angle cable I bought.

If it doesn't, I have the Dynex digi coax that seems to work in my bag.

I wonder if the fact that the Dynex digi has gold connectors (I think) whereas the GAK digi has silver connectors plays a part in receiving the error message? This is the cable I had Ted make:
18" 75ohm Digital Cable w/ Switchcraft silver Right Angle

Impedance can be a critical factor.

I have never had an RCA cable fail or give me an error message when using my PMD 661. I have lots of great digi cables including ones made by DigiGal, Darktrain and Ted. They all are great frankly, but the truth is I pretty much always use a skinny flexible cheapie phono RCA cable, because it is flexible, and does not care how I bend it and it. This allows me to place things in my bag where I want them versus where the cable wants them as you probably all know what I mean ;). I know this may fly in the face of the logic in this thread which is very sound from people that know their stuff. I run my cable between my Marantz and a Sound Devices USB Pre2. Is it possible that the preamp the OP is using could have something to do with the error and impedance fussyness, and the deck at the end of the chain is merely reflecting this? I just thought I'd share my experience and see if it helps lead to a resolution. My deck still has the next to latest firmware, not because I'm concerned, but because I just have never remembered to update it.
