? Chris Church 9200 PreAmp knobs
« on: August 28, 2014, 01:32:56 PM »
Hi,

I have just bought the Church 9200 PreAmp.

Can someone help me about the knobs?

The small have some fixed gains.

Is the big one able to gain from 0 to 40 Db?

Or does it work so I set the small to gain 10 and then turn the big till I reach the the next fixed gain which is 15 and so on?

Best wishes

Steen

As shown here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Church-Audio-CA-9200-Stereo-Preamp-3-wire-FOR-R09HR-SONY-D10-D50-ZOOM-H4-/251295462033

or here: http://www.church-audio.com/viewitem.php?productid=26

The small knob is a stepped series of gain positions.

The large knob seems to be a fine adjustment within the levels (the label for it ranges "off to max", so it may be a control from 0 to whatever you select as your "max" amplification with the small knob).

I don't have one/haven't used it so can't say more than what I see there...  It should be pretty easy to test though.

Left knob is 6 stepped gain levels.  Right knob is attenuation which under most circumstances you would leave all the way up.  Chris has said before that it could be for going into a camera that otherwise couldn't handle the level, or for an emergency adjustment if you see your recorder clipping.

Agree with Voltronic. There was recently a thread that covered this.  Maybe in Team Church Audio.  The final outcome was to set the gain at about ten the other knob all the way up.  For me 10 is fine for most amplified shows.  If it gets loud during the set turn the knob back a bit.

Here's the thread where Chris explains the settings for both knobs:

I do the same. Turn output vol to max, extra gain only if it needs to.

Wouldn't it be nice if Chris supplied some sort of documentation (either online or with the product) so that people knew what:

  a) the steps are,
  b) what each knob does

  and

  c) what the red band on one of the pairs of mics does?

These seem to be common questions that never stop.

True!
Just checked CC shop on ebay and there are some pictures what gives some useful infos, those shall be on his site too!
But I like his stuff, thats the more important, you need to buy a thing just once and use it for long ;)

Absolutely correct. The large knob is for emergency adjustment. And for fine tuning between ranges. But most of the time it should be set to max. The gain knob has 6 gain settings. 0 db + 10 +15db +25 db +30 db +40 db. 0-15 is for really loud shows +25 is for outdoor stadium  / fest shows +30 to +40 for acoustic shows where you need gain. And again these numbers are all based on hitting a target of around -10 on your Vu Meter with my mics. Other mics that are more sensitive the dpa 4060 comes to mind might require less gain in some situations. In the next month or so I will be coming up with a PDF for all my products a single pdf that users can download and view on a computer. So I don't waste a tree printing it. If there is anything you guys can think of besides the obvious that should be included in this pdf let me know via pm.
