List of Recorders that can be powered by 5V USB batteries
« on: May 03, 2015, 11:53:47 AM »
I think these newer 5V USB batteries ("cellphone/tablet re-chargers") are nice development for tapers.

Impressive run times(even with phantom power), low-heat (IME), you can buy these things everywhere - Quickie Marts, grocery stores and big-box retailers.

Cheap, and many options in capacity.

It's a more obvious feature on newer gear (Like the Tascam recorders), but I was surprised how many other, older pieces of gear use 5V.

Some of these don't have true power on the USB feature - just need custom USB>DC jack-in cable to take advantage of these batteries.

A quick study produced this list - and others/additions? Nuances? Deletions? Probably some preamps that might work too?

I use the PMD 661 and I paid more for the cable. The batteries around $8.50 and the cable around $10. The batteries have 2 ports. Can they be connected in series and parallel?

Since you're going all the way back to the JB3, might as well add the M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 and the MT-II to the list.

Reviving a dead thread here after my PMD660 died twice during a DMB show. (Good thing I was running a backup!)

Where would one find a cable to go from the USB to the power jack on the recorder? I'm not even sure what to call it to search for it.

Edit: OK, I kind of figured it out, but above it says my PMD660 takes a "type b," but that doesn't seem to exist. Might it be a type M?

I may hit you up for a dual cable once I find a battery that will work. I have several of the USB batteries packs, but I'm a little concerned they won't have enough life in them to power my 660 long enough. I may just take it to Best Buy or MicroCenter (big computer store in Cleveland) and have them help me. It's really confusing.

The Naztech or any of the clones will work well. Powering a pmd660, with phantom on, you would get around 12 hours of record time (although this really depends on the phantom draw of your mics). My Naztech has some miles on it, so a new battery could yield higher run times.

Which one do you use or recommend? The PB2800qi looks reasonable.

I can't speak to that one, as I don't have it to test but the PB15000 is a beast ---> http://www.amazon.com/Naztech-PB15000-Universal-Charger-Extended/dp/B007URKIGC

If you get that unit it most likely has a cable & tip that will run the 660 off the power port instead of the USB power port.
