Is the Sony PCM-M10 still the best recorder for 200 euro?
« on: September 15, 2015, 09:03:50 AM »
Unfortunately I happened to lose my trusty PCM-M10 and I'm thinking on buying another, but first I'd like to know if there's currently a better option for a similar price, maybe with a better preamp, though I know external preamps are recommended here, but I prefer to carry as little as possible. Considering that the M10 was first released in 2009, hasn't Sony made any other unit to replace it 6 whole years later? And what about other brands?

I think the M10 is still the best recorder at that price point, and quite a bit higher.

I agree.  For a small,'high quality 2 track, it is hard to beat.  If size is less of an issue, then the DR-70 would also be of consideration, although I think the build of the M-10 is a bit better.  You , of course, get 4 tracks with the DR-70.

It's just my (unpopular) opinion, but I prefer the Edirol R-05 to the M10.
Full sized SD card, no gain wheel on the side, simpler, cheaper.

My preference too, and for similar reasons, but I believe we're in the minority.  Different strokes for different folks, etc.

Same here. I think the (Roland) R-05 is the best little deck out there. I also like the still findable Tascam DR2D. I am not a huge M10 fan because it has some small but annoying flaws.

I agree. I have 2 R-05's and they never let me down!

I suspect the answer is "If you know you like the M10, then it's the best recorder for you."

Like with many things, I suspect most of us like what we own.  I also own a DR2d, but I do like the M10 better.

I heart my PCM-M10 but in Euro-land the Edirol R05 may be the better bargain. The great thing is that digital recorders are so uncolored now.

I own an M10, and R-05, and a DR2d. The R-05 is the only one that sees much action.

What are the "small" flaws of the m10......not trying to start a flame war!  Just trying to learn.......
