Sony M10 Stops Recording Problem
« on: November 11, 2015, 11:21:22 AM »
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this error.  I've got a brand new Sony M10 from B&H, using the recommended Sony micro SD cards, all  purchased this summer.  I've used the recorder about 20 times, and several times during the the course of the night, I'll look down and see that the recorder has stopped recording.  The unit it still powered on and the time code reads 0 00 00.  I'm running 24/96 mic in, in rec mode, hold switch on.  I don't think anything is getting bumped or jostled.  The card has be reformatted in the Sony unit before recording.  Maybe the problem is happening at the 2GB split when it goes to start a new file.

Is there anything I might be doing wrong?  Should I try a different brand card, or might this be a problem with the unit?

Thanks,
Bill

I have a few questions.  First, does it record anything?  If yes, does it stop at a fixed time?

Is the menu set to record to internal memory or the card?  How big is the card?  Is cross-memory recording enabled?  I ask because, at 24/96, you'll fill the internal memory (or a 4 GB card) in about two hours.  If cross-memory isn't turned on, I would guess it just stops at that point.

I doubled checked my settings.  16GB card.  I was recording Dead and Company and it did Set 1 fine. A 2.15 GB file, then started a new file.

Then during Set 2, 1.27 GB in, it just quit.  I saw it quit and started recording again.  So for some reason it quit 1.27 GB into a file write.

The unit was set to Card recording, with cross-memory enabled.

That's really strange.  It recorded normally when you re-started it?  All the files are OK?  Personally, I think I would contact Sony's customer service.  They were actually pretty responsive last time I needed them...

Does it only happen when recording to the card? And have you tried a different card?

I'd suspect the card and try another card first.  We had a Tascam that was randomly stopping recording and it was the card.

I had a problem with the card not sitting in the slot correctly. Also a bad card.

My solution for when I need it to be ultra reliable (ie I'm the only taper) is to use the INTERNAL memory. The internal memory has been rock solid for me. Obviously with the internal memory you don't need to worry about the card either being loose or getting jostled during the recording.

I use the internal memory all the time...If I ever get busted I switch the to the card format it and hand the card over to security.....leave with the recording on the internal...never happended...but if it ever does....

More problems with the M10.  Last night two songs in, I look down to see "File Damaged."  I restarted recording and all was well for the rest of the night.

I'm thinking of just picking up another M10.  Or perhaps I should just use internal memory.

I suppose I could also start with a new memory card.  Can anyone recommend one that has been solid for them?

I had a bad card once. I've never had an issue with internal memory so I start with that and roll to the card if needed. Usually the internal memory is enough for most shows.

Get a new card and let it record overnight as well.

If I had memory problems twice recording to the same card, I'd try replacing that first, yes.

Having a little trouble recalling the name, but there is a utility program to check for card memory errors and you should try using the SD file format utility on the card. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

I just posted a bunch of card utilities here that you may want to try:

You also may want to check out the PCM-M10 discussion threads and post over there.  You're likely to get many more responses.

Looks like the Sony PCM-M10 has been discontinued, so if you want to get another one, you might want to do it soon. Adorama Camera still has a few units in all colors, but a number of other places I checked were completely out.

That's crazy! I have never heard of this issue before this thread! My multiple M10's[2-3] over the last 6+ years have always worked perfectly with ANY MicroSDHC card that I ever used in it[8gb-32gb MicroSDHC Cards]! But I guess it just doesn't like your card?!?! I would def try a different card or just use the internal memory if you don't need more than 2 hours[@24/96], or 4 hours[@24/48 or below]!!!

Please keep us updated! I'm going to miss my M10's :(
