Schoeps MK5 Omni VS MK2 S Omni - Any have or try both?

(1/1)

NewTaper:
Hey TS - I'm juming back into taping and I want some Schoeps caps and while I prefer the sound of the Schoeps MK5 Omni caps I do prefer the price that goes with them at the moment...
Is there another Omni Schoeps cap that has the"MK5" omni sound? I'm looking to run it "low profile" with Nicky N Colettes and a M10.

I also see the tiny box is extinct but there is the Naiant IPA. Is this effectively a tiny box replacement with gain option etc?

Thanks in advance,
NT

DSatz:
The closest single-pattern Schoeps capsule to the omni setting of the MK 5 is the probably MK 2 S. The equivalence isn't exact, though. If you're very attached to that exact sound, I'd urge you to hold out for the real thing; a good used pair should come along sooner or later.

That said, the effective high frequency response of omni microphones--what you actually hear in the recordings you make with them--is the most sensitive of all patterns to variations in miking distance. In any given indoor recording space, there's always a lot of interaction between { the "spec sheet" high frequency response of the microphones } and { the room and the miking distance } as they affect the sound pickup.

NewTaper:
Thank you for the info. Something to mull over for sure.

NewTaper:
Has anyone had experience with both the MK-5 Omni & the MK-2 S ??
Any thoughts on the two pros cons or too close to call?

Thanks,
NT
