Cheap is kind of relative. How much are you looking to spend?

If the JB3 still works you could power it using a 5V usb battery for pretty cheap.

A new battery could work (not familiar with the JB3), but an iRiver is a comparable replacement 16-bit recorder. Would the MicroTrack I or II lock on the UA-5 signal? That would take advantage of the 24-bit signal sent from the UA-5.

I was a holdout too - I moved from the JB3 to the TASCAM DR-70D - everything I ever wanted in a "taper" deck!

Back in the day, I used the same external to power both my ua5 and jb3 -- I used a radioshack 5 volt regulator (costs $1.04) https://www.radioshack.com/products/5v-volt-regulator?gclid=Cj0KEQjwzpfHBRC1iIaL78Ol-eIBEiQAdZPVKg326j8hpRCwsx_XVdjQ24Pfk7mek_FJgtYRygO1ADkaAssq8P8HAQ to convert the 9 volts fed by a dvd battery into 5 volts for my jb3 and split a 9volt feed to my ua5.  Mounted the regulator into an old altoids box, which turned out to make a nice heat sink.
