Topic: what software is everybody using for laptop recording...

as soon as i get my mod ua-5 i'm gonna play around w/ laptop recording.  i was wondering what everybody here is using?  i have sound forge 6.0, how does everybody like that?  any opinions would be great!

For Windows, use something that allows you to record files over 2 GB in size. As far as I know, SF does not. Try WaveLab, which allows you to set split points, or Vegas Video, which uses a proprietary file format.

nTrack (automatically splits files before 2GB limit)
Sound Forge 5.0 (I never upgraded to 6.0, I use this as my primary editor)

I'm more comfortable in SF5.0, since I've been using that for a few years now, but nTrack is definitely better for recording since its easier on the processor and you don't have to worry about 2GB limits.

According to Sonic Foundry SF6 supports files 4GB+ in size.

test the 4gb size limit at home before you try in the field.  I have had some issues with it I think...although I usze wavelab exclusively now!

ya i'm gonna do a lot of testing before i attempt to use a laptop in the field.  that is if i can talk my wife into letting me use her laptop

i use sound forge 5.0 myself, have copies of some others (sf6.0, wavelab) but haven't really played around with them much.  the 2gb limit kinda sucks, but to be honest most of the time it is not an issue.  the typical set last less than 2 hrs, which = about 2gb for 24/48 recording.  
but yeah, there are times when i sit there, getting ready for the virtual "flip the tape" action to start a new session manually as sf5.0 doesn't do it on its own.  luckily it's easy enough as hitting the spacebar twice when i've got the "create a new session" option selected in the sf recording screen and the record/stop button highlighted!

...but it's a hell of a challenge when the encore goes longer than expected and you're back 10 rows playing with your friends.

Go Wavelab with the "split" function for the brain dead (or expanded) among us.

Cool edit pro is what i use normally, with wavelab to split tracks.  I did use a Total recorder for a while, but it sucked, i mean, it worked, but you couldn't do anything with the sound. bad DB meter, it did its job, didn't split tracks without a pain in the ass. but wavelab can do it easy good luck man.

guyz, i dont have a soundcard yet, but running wavelab 4.0, and testing it w/ a cd sample > wavelab, shouldnt i be able to hear this on playback?

i have been bringing up a wave file from my music library under wavelab and record and save, and then when i try to listen on playback, NOTHING......i know the file is saved as a wav under my library, so why the problem???
