24 bit to 16 bit transfer, newbie ?
« on: October 12, 2004, 06:13:26 PM »
Hey,

I'm pulling a SKB show that's in 24 bit (no 16-bit version looks to available :() and 48k.  How do i convert these flac files into 16 bit/44.1k format?   Of course, I could just burn it to dvd+R but what's the fun in that?  No tunes for the road!

Thanks
Chris E.

using a program with dither algorithms, like SOundforge, WaveLab, Cool Edit Pro, etc.

simply, you need to dither from 24bits to 16bits.

not sure if there is a mod on the board right now but this topic belongs in the computer recording forum. errrr Ask the Tapers forum....thanks Skalinder :P

Soundforge/wavelab/etc. all do this. I think the process is resample to 44.1, normalize, if you desire, then bit depth convert to 16 with your choice of dither.

It takes some time, but is faster than rerecording it at 16/44.1

that's it. be sure to dither last.

all post-processing including normalizing should be done in the highest possible bit depth and sample rate... therefore,

normalize, resample, dither

you can dither and resample in CDWav, I believe.

never tried in cdwav, but recall reading quite a few posts dissing the resampling quality provided by cdwav.

it's certainly not wavelab, but it's free.

Guess I should've elaborated.  Cool Edit 96 is available for free as shareware and I've been told it does a far better job of resampling (not sure if it would dither) than cdwave.  Also, audacity is a free program that I've heard a LOT of good things about.

Bottom line, from what I've heard cdwav is a great program for splitting tracks but not for resampling/dithering
