.ape audio files?
« on: March 11, 2005, 10:07:45 AM »
I downloaded an old Rolling Stones torrent @ Easytree and just realized that they are ".ape" files.

Is this a lossy format?  What (free) program can I play these on?
(no luck with Winamp or Windows Media Player)

Thanks.
Brian

WinAmp may have an APE plugin, not sure - check the Winamp site.

It does. If you plan on keeping these files around for a while, use SHNtool to convert them to FLAC. APE is not an open-source format. Furthermore, several members of this board (myself included) have experienced problems with APE files that couldn't decompress.
Out of the game … for now?

yeah, APE files are odd.  They are lossless, but very hard to work with, as their compression is not very effective.
