...another I Need Help with Bit Torrent Thread...
« on: February 27, 2006, 08:58:05 PM »
I use BitTornado for doing Bit Torrents.
It has the little colored dot that tells you if your torrenting correctly.
It used to be green all the time, indicating that everything was going good.
Now, it's always yellow indicating that I may be firewalled. The weird thing is when I use BT.etree and I check to see if I am actually firewalled it says I'm not. I have no problem seeding shows or acquiring shows, but the yelllow dot makes me think I'm not doing things as efficiently as possible ???

Is there a good place I can go to that can tell me if my connection is working properly and what problems I may have by testing it?

The dot on Bit Tornado went yellow after I switched cable modems with my cable company.

I have a software firewall and router that someone helped me configure when I started doing torrents, too.

the stats at etree haven't worked in a year or so.  it shows 0 firewalled on every torrent.  I would bet that either your ports aren't open in the router and/or the same ports are not open in your client (tornando).  what kind of router do you have?  your IP changes from time to time and even if the ports are open in the router it may not have the correct IP addy.

What he said.... and you might want to consider looking at uTorrent.  It's a great client and uses a much smaller memory footprint.  It's also starting to support end to end encryption that gets you around some ISP limits.  I've been pretty happy since switching from BitTorrnado.

utorrent rocks!  I'm pulling 530 down while uploading at 40+.  I know that my speeds are capped but I don't get the same results with other clients.  with others if I'm uploading at 40-50 kbs my downloads are not anywhere near my max.  with utorrent they are.

So, is there a place I can go to confirm that I am firewalled? Like a website that can monitor my system and tell me?

I use the D-Link DI-524 router and Norton Personal Firewall.

As others have mentioned, I'd be happy to change clients. But I want to get out from behind the firewall first.

This is frustrating...

Gordon or anybody would you be willing to help me diagnose this over the phone sometime?

digital panic or dime a dozen will show if you are firewalled or not.  do you know how to get into your router settings?  this link should help

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-524/BitTorrent.htm

the first example is for the original bit torrent client.  in tornado go to prefferences to pick a port range.    then follow the directions and you should be good to go.

Yeah, I've been there and done that...
The directions for my router are inaccurate, but I have that part figured out.  I need to configure something in my network correctly i think...

When I get off work I'll check it all again...
I'm starting to think that I may not have a static IP address anymore... I remember I had it set-up as static, but with the new cable modem hardware that may have gotten missed ??? dang 'puters

as for the static IP.  I don't do that.  99% of the time my router gives the same IP out to each of my computers.  when it doesn't I go into my router settings and change it.

For some reason I think it's got to be static... I dunno... why can't this be easy?

If my ports are blocked or firewalled why can I seed things fine? It just doesn't make sense to me  ???

On DimeaDozen if my number is in red on the peers page I'm firewalled right?
I just set my IP as static and I'm still firewalled...

you have to open the same ports in both your client and in your router.  setting up a static IP will not solve anythign untill the ports are opened.

right but are the same ports open in your client and your router?  you will have to close tornado and re start it for the change to take effect.
