MBHO Omni cap recommendations
« on: September 03, 2003, 05:48:28 PM »
KA 100 DK Omni with presence peak
KA 100 LK Linear Omni

Does anyone have experience/opinions on these different capsules?

I'm thinking of selling my Oktava's to get some omni capsules.

depends what you plan on using them for really.

I have the ka100dk's w/ hi freq emphasis (or 'presence peak')

i think that the other ones would wind up being a bit TOO bassy.
I have only run them 1 way so far, split, in an outdoor setting.
I've run at various sized shows ranging from a 25' split on one of the smaller stages at HSMF... ranging to a 45' split in the phish tapers section at Chula Vista 7/8 this year. (one mic on each side of the sbd)

I can hook you with some tapes so you can hear them if you like. let me know via PM.

peace!

I'll probably use them for outdoor recording. I've had good luck using approx. 28" spacing with my Oktava omni's. I just prefer the sound of omni recordings. They always sound more natural to me than cardioid recordings. Maybe I'll build a Jecklin disk. I've heard good things about using that with omnis.

No, I don't have the active cables. I bought these microphones back in 1990 from Josephson Engineering. The bodies are the C-640 and the caps are KA-20 cardioid. Unfortunately the caps are not matched very well.

The DK's sound nice for distance recording (where the HF emphasis helps to balance the HF losses that naturally occur) but are way too bright for use up close or on stage.
Schoeps cmc6/4v / Line Audio CM3, OM1 / ADK A51 / Church Audio CA-14
Naiant Tinybox v2.2 / NBox(P) / Church Audio ST9200 / CA-UGLY

That's what I figured.

I'm just trying to figure out whether I should sell the Oktava's and build my rig around the MBHO's now. They are two very different sounding microphones. The pre-amp choices for the MBHO's are kind of funky too. I really don't want to buy an MP-2.
