a/v receiver advice... anyone try the Onkyo TX-SR605..?
« on: February 01, 2008, 12:04:27 AM »
so i am looking for an a/v receiver... gonna likely use either the nanostats or the omnistats for a speaker system with it - this (using nano/omnistats) is pretty much non-negotiable, due to their incredible WAF -> ceiling speakers are a must for this project, and from what i see, in my budget, the nanostats or the omnistats are the way to go. please correct me if i am wrong...

anyway, the a/v receiver requirements, for me are listed below; thx, in advance, for any input or insight...

the unit MUST
  • do 7.1
  • do all the lossless and audio stuff/formats the blu-ray can and will throw at it via hdmi (from the ps3)
  • handle the audio formats the ps3 can throw it via hdmi
  • accept hdmi input from the ps3 and the directv dvr box, and then output video via hdmi (to the splitter/booster and then an in-wall 15m run to the tv set hdmi input) all @ 1080p

and MUST also output audio (sent to it from the ps3 and directv box) via the 8 (7.1) analog cable pairs, sending it to passive speakers (fronts centers rears) and a powered subwoofer

I have an SR605, and it's awesome.  Definitely recommended.

Well I don't have the analog outputs hooked up, so I can't vouch for that one.  But yes.  Although I don't think the PS3 outputs anything other than bitstream over HDMI.  I'll have to check AVS on that one.

thx again, john.

yeah - the ps3 does output everything via bitstream, so hdmi handles all of that...

but

the ps3 also does true, two channel sacd output via the right/left analog outs of the ps3, and i want to hook those up, too :D

some good discussion of current HDMI-compatible receivers over on avsforum.org, including the 605.

Just FYI: I remember seeing issues of lip-synch with the new Onkyo receiver lines, I think there are some settings that can be tweaked to reduce/eliminate this problem but wanted to mention it.

John Kelly, did you ever have issues with lip-synch??

i will keep looking - a/v sync is muy importante. i will say i see lipsync issues, too - but i believe that what i see is due to poor broadcasts...

yeah, one of my local channels seems to have lip-synch issues often, while ESPN is pretty much always spot-on. I don't have a receiver right now, I just run the DirectTV HDMI out to my projector and the analog audio outs go to my preamp.

I will also highly recommend the Onkyo SR605. I have never had a single problem of any kind with this receiver. My blu-ray discs look and sound fantastic via hdmi on the sr605.

I really don't think that you can find a better a/v receiver for the price. They can be bought brand new on Ebay for $399.00 (that's where I bought mine). Unless you have alot of money to burn, this is the receiver to get.

I've currently got a Yamaha RX-V2700, which does HDMI 1.2a (its a year old). If I was on the market, I'd get t he newer version of it, which is the 3800, and it does 1.3 HDMI, which has the support for the HD codecs IIRC. you can probably score one for cheap(er) at amazon.com or something...

after some research, i have a ew questions...

does the unit do 7.1 or not..? there is alot of confusion re: this...

also, is there a hdmi handshake issue with the directv dvr's..? that is a deal-breaker for me if true...

thx

It does do 7.1.  What is the confusion?

Dunno about the DirecTV, though.  I'm on cable with no box/dvr.
