Minijack to XLR stereo
« on: January 14, 2012, 05:09:15 AM »
Hi everyone:

First of all, thank you for this great forum.

I have a pair of AT853 ending in mini-jack 1/8 so I can't use them with my recorder's phantom voltage which is given in the XLR connectors. I want to know if the is any accesories that allows me to convert this 1/8 plug to 2 XLR connectors, one for each mic. Thank you so much. (I want real stereo, L mic to L-XLR R mic to R-XLR, not a joint stereo).

I also upload a image of what I want... I really don't know if it exists and in that case if it splits the channels to a real stereo.

Thank you guys...

This is not possible unless you have phantom adapter or a battery box (to power the 853's) in the chain

853 w/ mini plug > battery box > mini to xlr y-cable
Or
853 w/ mini plug > naiant Pfa http://www.naiant.com/naiant/inlinedevices.html

Thank you! So... if I buy Naiant PFA I'll have to buy the one ending in a female 1/8 jack and just plug it to my mics out!? I'll be able to use the the phantom power of my recorder? :D

Thank you so much for you answer :)

Sorry for been so nosy but I don't understand something in the descrption of my Tascam Dr40, it's says the following:

XLR / 1/4” mic/line input with phantom power

Does that mean that I have also phantom over line inputs? Is that even possible? In case i'ts right and it's possible...in that case I just have to buy a "minijack stereo to 2 jack mono", haven't?

Thank you again :D

I took a quick look at the manual and its specs (pg 114) suggest the unit provides phantom power over both XLR and 1/4".  However, whether you use the XLR or 1/4" connectors probably doesn't matter (though I recommend XLR since I find them more secure):

Since your AT853s are terminated in an 1/8" stereo plug, this suggests the mics do not include a phantom power adapter, but instead are configured to run on plug-in power.  Therefore, you need an adapter cable that does two things:  <1> converts the connectors, i.e. XLR to 1/8", and <2> converts phantom power to plug-in power.  Naiant's PFAs will accomplish both.

Warning:  connecting your plug-in power mics directly to a phantom power source may damage your mics.
